They Give Weeds a Good Name
November Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Happiness”
Giving flight to dreams coming true.
A friend once told me, “You want a meadow, they want a lawn.”
I was talking about my neighbors with their chemically enhanced lawns of green perfection.
My lawn, on the other hand, was full of dandelions and clover and all kinds of purple wildflowers that others called weeds. It made me happy.
Dandelions still make me feel like a six-year old. A very wise six-year old.
Yellow is not my favorite color (one of my least favorite, as a matter of fact), but the dandelion flower is so cheerful.
I once went to a class that talked about all the cool things you could do with the things that grew wild around your yard.
Dandelions were the star. We passed around a dandelion salad, enhanced with a light lemon vinaigrette, and it was delicious. She talked about tinctures and tonics and teas. Every part of a dandelion is useful. Their very growth is good for the soil.
But the “poof” is my favorite part. The dandelion that has gone to seed. Picking it, holding in your hand and savoring it, making a wish, closing your eyes and then — you blow. The wish will come true. You know it.
Plus I believe I’m blowing good wishes to all the places those seeds will fall and all the people they will fall on, who probably won’t even notice.
Dandelions — they are practical and useful survivors, but they’re also magical. They make me happy.
