There I’ve said it; I used to be an accountant. Second only to lawyers when people think of boring occupations. Now you know my deepest and darkest secret…
I could rattle off a “Statement of source and appropriation of funds” before morning tea. It helped that I loved maths at school, and really, it is immensely satisfying for someone with OCD to balance the books.
It was my fall-back career for when I couldn’t get a theatre gig and luckily accountancy work was always available. It turned out to be a sensible choice.
You see, there’s that word — sensible — something I never wanted to be. Like P for predictable, I shudder at the thought.
One of my favourite books when I was a child was “Peter Pan.” What a story! Tinkerbell would be pleased to know that I still believe in fairies. Being an accountant was just too grown up.
