By 1893 she was overthrown in a revolution led by nine Americans and four Europeans!

Willoby must have sensed the shift in me. I stepped back from his grip and walked deeper into the darkness. I could hear his footsteps following. I stopped and without turning asked. “Did Makelaka tell you all this?”
“Yes,” he answered.
“So, I have the power to do what my mother couldn’t?”
“Yes.”
“Let me assure you,” I said, turning around to face him. “I did not consciously kill or will ever kill anyone. I hear what you are saying, but the essence of the diamond has to be for the good.”
“It is,” Willoby said softly. “For the good of its people. It seems to have a conscience, as all the guests of the hotel and many of its workers escaped the fire. Eighteen people of the twenty-five killed were employees and known enemies of the Tribe. The others had to be connected somehow.
“But my grandmother wasn’t an enemy?”
“I suspect that your grandmother’s span of power ran out before she could be saved. Even Tara herself was in danger of demise, but it was believed that ‘Pele’ lifted her from the flames because she was to become the mother of the chosen one.”
“You mean me?”
“I believe so Apikaila.”
“So that’s why she was spared. But really, who knows for sure that she was spared. This is all conjecture.”
“Because you are here. And, I am sure you have a cross-shaped birthmark on your back.”
“I do,” I finally admitted.
“This all adds up. The fact that she was the firstborn female. She was also the namesake of the one who started all this, and the direct descendant of the child Tara was carrying when she was cursed by Ku!” he stopped abruptly.
“Whose name is the same as mine?” I asked.
He continued, “In 1820, after the death of King Kamehameha, the first ritual of the Oolonpo people was conducted. During that ritual, his power was handed down to his son Kamehameha II. He succeeded in overthrowing the ancient idols of his people and taking the power onto himself. This opened the door to shiploads of Protestant missionaries who built churches and schools. They then set out to convert the inhabitants to Christianity and gain control of Hawaii. Kamehameha II had no intention of ceding his island, so Hawaii remained independent.
The diamond went into the hands of Kalakaua I after one of Tara’s ancestors married the youngest great-grandson of Kamehameha I. Some predicted the end of Hawaiian royalty after the marriage. Kalakaua I was succeeded by his sister Liliuokalani in 1891.
