The Weather Watcher-An Abundance of Rain in June Has Flowers and Vegetables Thriving

Volume 8-Meanwhile No Relief in Site For the Heatwave in the South and Southwest

Coreopsis Thriving Thanks to Recent Rain and Warm Temperatures/Author Photo

Welcome back to the Weather Watcher series. I hope you are enjoying my articles and my new publication, Weather Watchers Central. I would appreciate those of you who read my articles, to also follow the publication.

Writers are welcome; please take a look at the Submission Guidelines, send me an email, and I will add you as a writer. My guidelines are simple and straightforward. Welcome all weather geeks!

An Extremely Dry May Leads to A Tropical Feeling June

May was brutally dry. After a very wet ending to April (almost 5 inches in the last 10 days of the month), we only received 1.8 inches of rain for the month of May. That coupled with warm temperatures and wind led to extremely dry conditions. Sections of the lawn turned brown and we had to water the flowers and vegetables every day for a month. As much as I like gardening, that got old.

June has been a different story. Although it has been a rather rainy month at times, there have been a few nice days. The temperatures have been warm and the higher humidity has led to a tropical feel most of the month. In these conditions, the plants thrive. So far this month we have received 4.5 inches, a good amount.

Weather Outlook

Following is the precipitation outlook for the coming week, from the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center:

Map Courtesy of The National Weather Center

As you can see, over the next 7 days there will be an abundance of rainfall over much of the country, the exception being the Western section. In some places, the rain could be heavy at times.

As I mentioned in my title, Texas and other Southern states have been experiencing unrelenting heat for the last week or two. Heat indexes have been well over 100, in fact over 110 in places. Following are some heat index maps for some coming days:

Maximum Heat Index Values Forecast For Saturday, July 1st/Courtesy of The National Weather Service

As you can see, the heatwave will continue in the South. It does appear that the highest heat index values will shift further East by the weekend.

Also, it’s always interesting to take a look at the latest forecast video from Direct Weather:

This video seems to indicate a cooldown for July at least across the Eastern US. Time will tell if this happens.

Finally, I like to see what the Farmers’ Almanac has to offer regarding weather outlooks:

June 28th to 30th: Mostly fair, turning hot again.

Stay tuned for more weather updates.
