The Unkept Promise
A Poem of Impatience

I
The girl from the Maple Street, Gave me her word. Whole spring has passed, But she didn’t keep her word.
With a smile that can tear the sky, She promised to see me. Was lost in the bondage of love, She promised to free me.
She never came, She forgot about me. Her heart was blind, The love I had for her, She couldn’t see.
The girl from the Maple Street, Gave me her word. Whole spring has passed, But she didn’t keep her word.
Her French accent, Made me lose, My whereabouts of the present.
Her fiery smile and glowing eyes. Her words were music to my ears, I was flying the skies.
Could have been honest with me, Why did you lie to me? Waiting here at the park, Soon, it got dark. Then came the summer, Then fall, and soon snow came down.
I couldn’t think of anything else, To her, my heart was bound.
The girl from the Maple Street, Gave me her word. Now, a whole year has passed, But she didn’t keep her word.

II
Gave my word to the American, That I will see him, A whole year has passed, I did not see him.
Wrinkles seen in each other eyes, Symbolizes that we have gotten old. Enjoyed talking to you. Tried to keep my heart young.
I admire you for being bold, But the reality is cold. We both have obligations, Can not walk away from.
Work calls, I have to take care of the kids. So many are dependent on me. I have to take care of their needs.
Gave my word to the American, That I will see him, A whole year has passed, I did not see him.
The poem is about a man who has been waiting for a long time for his love interest to come back and see him. However, she never came and kept her promise. Then, the poem also talks about the woman who wants to honor her word and see the man but has responsibilities that prevent her from falling in love again. I found my inspiration for this poem in college when witnes a sad love story.
