The Ukraine Crisis Spreads Its Dangerous Wings
Geopolitics ain’t boring, for sure

Sabre-rattling
Now that Russia is apparently on the brink of invading Ukraine, they are sabre-rattling in the Far East. The theory is that Russia is warning Japan not to get involved with the US in a sanctions regime against them if they do invade the Ukraine.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Defence a fleet of 24 Russian ships had been exercising in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk since early February. The vessels include submarines, destroyers and frigates.
Unusual activity
A report in the South China Morning Post cited James Brown (an associate professor of international relations specialising in the Russian Far East at the Tokyo campus of Temple University):
“This deployment is very unusual in both its scale and timing. Conditions in the Sea of Okhotsk are going to be very testing, in particular, as there will be extremely low temperatures, significant ice cover and drifting ice, all of which combine to make operations dangerous.”
This is another bad sign
Russia is clearly preparing on all fronts for an invasion of the Ukraine.
Just yesterday there were reports that the websites of the Ukrainian military and at least two of the nation’s biggest banks were knocked offline in a DDOS cyberattack (TheRegister.com).
Henry Ford famously said that ‘History is bunk’.
Well, we never seem to learn from it. Politicians generally are stupid, short sighted and venal.
During Trump’s MAGA era, Putin was given much too much elbow room. Doing deals ‘mano a mano’ with Putin was a crazy idea.
But the laxity started before that. I warned about it in 2016 (and who the heck am I to know about such things)?
Putin plays chess while the West plays the violin on the burning walls of its society. Whatever happened to Realpolitik? Whatever happened to standing up to bullies?
War is coming for sure.
And I hope that in 5 years time I’m not writing a piece that says ‘I told you so’.
About me: I write on a variety of topics including humor, tech and travel, together with daily news events and the minutiae of daily life on a boat. I also write techno-thrillers…and about…
…the idiocy of Western politicians, geofuckups and a failure to learn from history…with dire warnings
