The Trusty Gardener-My Onion Seeds Have Sprouted/The Greenhouse is Set Up For the Season
Soon I Will Start My Heirloom Tomatoes From Seed

Welcome back to my Trusty Gardener series. Today is the first day of Spring. It was a nice sunny day with temperatures in the upper 40s, but still a cold wind. That’s where the greenhouse comes in. It will protect plants from the wind while producing a nice warm environment for them to thrive. All it takes is the sun!
A few weeks ago I planted some onion seeds. You can read about my technique and which varieties I planted here:
The seeds began to sprout towards the end of last week. The germination rate looks pretty good so I should have some onions to plant come the latter part of May. Once they sprouted, I placed the containers on a sunny windowsill for a few days. I then realized it was time to put up the greenhouse. Even though we had a major winter storm just last week:
I set up my portable greenhouse on Saturday, March 18th. As I mentioned above, it seems early. I checked a story I wrote last year to see what the date was, it was March 17th! So I’m right on schedule. For some reason, it doesn’t seem like it’s that time already. But it has been a long winter.

The forecast for this week indicates we will have most days in the 40s or 50s. The remaining snow will soon be gone even though we had at least 2 feet on the ground after the storm last week.

I will be keeping a close eye on the seed containers that I planted using Winter Sowing, With the warming temperatures, they may begin to sprout in the next few weeks. Once they sprout, I now have the greenhouse ready for them.
It’s Almost Time to Plant Heirloom Tomato Seeds
Later this week I will plant the tomato seeds. Most of the varieties will be heirlooms. You just can’t beat the flavor of these. Although the shapes and sizes can be more irregular than the hybrid varieties, the flavor more than makes up for it.
Stay tuned for more updates.
