The Weather Watcher-The 30th Anniversary of the Blizzard of 1993-Will Today’s Storm Rival This Historic Event?
Volume 6 -This Will be the 4th Snowstorm So Far In March

Welcome back to the Weather Watcher series. I hope you are enjoying my articles and my new publication, Weather Watchers Central. I started this publication in January and have 8 followers to date. I would appreciate those of you who read my articles to also follow the publication. I have been interested in the weather since I was a young boy, especially after I got a weather station kit for Christmas. Fifty-plus years later, I’m still a weather geek. I should have been a meteorologist!
Writers are welcome; please take a look at the Submission Guidelines, send me an email, and I will add you as a writer. My guidelines are simple and straightforward.
The Blizzard of 1993-March 12–14 1993
I remember this well. Our son was born on February 18, 1993. It was our first winter in our current home on Polkville Hill, located about 4 miles Southeast of Norwich, NY. We still refer to our son as “Blizzard Baby”.

At the time I didn’t have a snowblower or plow. We received somewhere in the vicinity of 35 inches, although it was so hard to measure due to the strong winds and drifting. Syracuse, NY received 42.9 inches. I remember trying to shovel the 4-foot-deep plus drifts on our front sidewalk. After a few hours, I hadn’t even made it to the garage and driveway yet. The wind was relentless and the cold air stung my face as the windchills were brutal.
Thankfully, the county road that we live on was plowed. The county crew did an outstanding job keeping the road open during the night. The side roads, however, were not kept open. It would be a few days until all roads were plowed.
Luckily, our neighbors who ran the farm across the road from us were wonderful to us and brought over a tractor with a bucket to dig us out. The following fall I bought a snowblower and have had one ever since.
Winter Storm Sage-How Much Snow Will We Get?
As usual, the forecast amounts are all over the place. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and is predicting 9 to 18 inches for us by Wednesday morning, March 15th, with winds gusting to 40 mph. I think at times we will have blizzard conditions due to the wind. According to Apple’s weather app, we can expect 8 inches. Apple Weather is now integrated with Dark Sky, a well-respected weather app. Following is a snowfall forecast map from Wayne Mahar, a long-time Central NY TV meteorologist who now is semi-retired and lives in South Carolina.

He also started his own weather forecasting business, Precision Weather which provides forecasts for many events nationwide such as the Oscars, sporting events, etc. Here’s the latest forecast video from Direct Weather:
