The Tooth Fairy — Part V

My name is Henry James and I’m a writer for Dark Sides of the Truth Magazine.

Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Conclusion

It’s Thursday evening and I’m sitting on a park bench in Tomball Texas listening to an insane story. A story told to me by a seemingly sane, Wayne Bethard who owns an auto repair shop, has a wife and kids and is respected by the community. Wayne also happens to be a close friend to a death row prisoner who killed Wayne’s half brother.

And that’s not even the weird part.

“At first I thought it was mom checking on me,” Wayne said. “We were both scared of what Sammy might try so Mom would come in from time to time just to make sure I was okay. I felt something straighten my hair and opened my eyes. I got to tell you it scared the shit out of me. It was kind of grinning, it’s big silver eyes blinking as it stared at me. Then it reached out, patted my face and started crawling down the bed post of our bunk beds. I guess the jingling noise woke Sammy up.”

“Jingling noise?”

Wayne nodded his head, “Yeah, the jingling of coins it had in a purse tied to its side with a golden chain. I saw it plain as day because we had a nightlight plugged in on the other side of the room.”

“Like I said, the jingling noise must have woken Sammy up because before it could get down the bed post he grabbed it by the throat and took it across the room to the night light for a better look.”

“What the hell was it?”

“Not sure. Once Sammy held it next to the light I could tell it wasn’t a monkey. It wasn’t anything I’d ever seen before. What was really weird was it’s hands. They looked like a regular person’s hands.”

Wayne stopped for a moment as if trying to recall the next events which gave me time to catch up with my notes. I finished and looked up at him.

“So what happened next?”

“I don’t think Sammy expected this thing to talk, but when he asked it what the hell it was it answered. It was like its voice was coming from everywhere in the room, not loud but just…everywhere at once if that makes any sense.”

“What I am I? What you know me to be Sammy Bethard. You dream not. I the Tooth Fairy be. I come to those who believe. I appear when the seconds of reality begin to drift away into unreality. I come to collect what has been left for me, to collect that which was always mine. I come to leave proof of my existence for those who believe.”

Wayne paused. I guessed he was back in that moment, hearing what this creature was saying to his brother, reliving it again in his mind.

“When it shook the purse by its side I thought Sammy was going to choke it to death. All he was thinking about was the money inside that purse. What the Tooth Fairy said next surprised even Sammy.”

“It is what you desire Sammy Bethard. You have always longed for money and power and you shall have it. Now you are thinking you can take it and destroy me and no one will be the wiser. But alas, you know you cannot. You know the purse may possess a magic you cannot conquer. You are thinking you may find it necessary to strike a bargain with me. You are correct Sammy Bethard. You must know the magic or the purse will be nothing more than a small patch of leather to you. And so, I will strike a bargain with you.”

“Then Sammy did the one thing he should have never ever done,” Wayne said, almost whispering.

My guess was a pact written in blood. You know it seemed to work for Satan in all the movies I’d seen.

“Sammy agreed to let it go on the condition it would show him how to use the purse and it did. It handed him the purse and Sammy opened it up then got really pissed because there was nothing inside. The Tooth Fairy smiled at my brother.”

“It is the magic I spoke of Master Bethard. You must have the knowledge before the purse will be of use. Watch and listen carefully.”

I watched as Wayne held his hand out and rotated his palm in a clockwise motion three times, then counterclockwise the same number of times. He was staring at the water fountain, but I was damned sure he wasn’t seeing a thing. When he spoke it totally creeped me out. It was almost as if he was channeling the voice of someone, or something else.

“Release ye purse your bounty,

the amount I wish to see.

Release ye purse your bounty,

Give forth your riches to me.”

Wayne stopped for a moment and held his hands in place. After a couple of seconds he placed his arms against his legs and leaned forward again.

“No sooner did it say that than the purse in Sammy’s hand got fat, like there was something inside of it,” Wayne whispered. “I watched my brother jam his hand inside and pull out a fist full of coins. All silver dollars. Then he started squealing like a stuck pig saying he was going to be a bazillioniare over and over and over.”

I was scribbling notes as fast as I could but I stopped and just looked at Wayne when he told me what happened next.

“It was what the Tooth Fairy said after that and when I think about it now was the very reason Sammy should have never agreed to the bargain. We both watched it begin to lose form, its outline getting wavy and kind of transparent. Just before it disappeared it warned Sammy.”

“Before I leave you I am compelled to remind you for every boon there is a curse residing within. You will become rich and powerful beyond your dreams, but for these rewards a sacrifice will be required. What you require of the purse must be repaid. Each time you use it, you must place one of your teeth in the purse. Should you ever forget to do so, I will return and reclaim from you what has always been mine.”

“Right, so did it ever come back for the purse?”

Wayne stood up and reached into a front pocket of his jeans. When he sat back down he stretched out his hand palm up in front of me. In the center of his hand sat a small clear plastic vial. Inside the vial was a tooth.

I stared at the vial and then it hit me. Holy shit. I looked up at Wayne. He was slowly nodding his head.

“That’s right Mr. James. It wasn’t just the purse the Tooth Fairy was interested in. Let Robert know you have it and tell him I’ve done my part. After this I don’t expect to ever see the two of you again. Got it?”
