The Time-Consuming Temptation: YouTube’s Unstoppable Hold on Users

After the dominance by Chinese-based app, TikTok, it looks like Google has revamped its approach. According to a recent study conducted by Productivity Spot, YouTube was the site that people the most time on.
The stats are staggering for YouTube, which belongs to its parent company Alphabet (Google). The total number of visits to YouTube was 33.57 billion monthly visits. In addition, users spent 20 minutes and 22 seconds on average per session.

You might be wondering what is the next site trailing YouTube in time spent? Surprisingly, Facebook got an average of 10 minutes and 36 seconds per visit. Considering all of the backlash and changing its company name to “Meta” it seems to have worked for now.
Instagram had an average of 8 minutes and 17 seconds spent on the platform whereas Wikipedia users spent 3 minutes and 53 seconds while Instagram.

Surprisingly, TikTok did not make it into the top 10, 20, or even 40. Per the study, it ranked 60th place. The Director of Productivity Spot, Jim Markus, offered his thoughts on the poor performance by TikTok.
“Surprisingly, TikTok failed to break the top twenty, ranking 60th overall, which could be due to most users browsing TikTok using the app rather than web-based or mobile browsers. Despite the app’s addictive nature, users were found to spend a surprisingly brief 3 minutes and 47 seconds on the site, when visiting from a browser.”

The Study The Overall Ranked These Sites According To Several Metrics
The number of minutes spent on a site are important, but the study looked at other performance indicators. For instance, it looked at these metrics:
- Average monthly visitors
- Average user time spent on site per visit
- Average number of pages per visit
- Percentage of users who leave the site after viewing the page
- Overall index score

YouTube got the most amount of time spent on its site. However, Google ranked 1st with an index score of 72.75. YouTube earned a 65.56 index score followed by Facebook (62.07) and Wikipedia (61.34).
As to why the study was designed this way, Productivity Spot Director Markus said, “Looking at how long users spend on a website is a useful metric for gauging how engaging it is, but it doesn’t tell you the full story if the site doesn’t receive a lot of visitors. We felt it prudent to consider other factors within our index, such as monthly web traffic and bounce rate, to ensure that the findings were more representative of the sites we spend the most time on.”
