The Sweet Taste of British Tradition: Indulge in the Delightful Victoria Sponge Cake!

In response to Dancing Elephants prompt 32 of 52

A classic Victoria Sponge baked by the author

Oh, what a delight! To write about one of the greatest pleasures in life, FOOD!

You see, writing, like cookery, has to come from a place of love and joy.

One of my greatest pleasures is a good ‘ole’ slice of cake. I’m talking a good slab of an excellent tried and tested traditional recipe.

What could be more delicious than a traditional British cake? The grand old Victoria sponge cake.

So, in response to this week’s prompt, like, I needed an excuse to bake and eat cake, I got to work and baked for you all. YUM YUM..

The Victoria sponge cake dates back a long way to Victorian times. Allegedly, Queen Victora had a very sweet tooth.

The Victora sponge cake was said to be the Queen’s favourite and thus named after her.

Afternoon tea is an English tradition. In the Victorian era, afternoon tea would consist of seed and fruit cake. However, the possibility arose that children could choke on the seeds and the fruit pieces.

A light sponge was prepared as an alternative, which eventually became a tea-time staple and long-standing British tradition.

I’m sure you all know that the British people are obsessed with cups of tea. It goes without saying that the cake must be served with tea (preferably in fine china cups for maximum effect).

I thought it would be a good idea to share the recipe I used today so that you can have a go at making one yourself. I topped my cake with more icing. You can serve it with fresh cream and strawberries too.

I hope you enjoyed reading about what’s cooking in my kitchen today. It brought me great pleasure to bake and write about one of my favourite foods, CAKE…

Thank you Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles for the prompt. Your dessert had my mouth watering.
