KTHT SEPTEMBER PROMPT — THE SUN SPLITS ITSELF (OFF)
The Sun Was Getting Bored
Turning inward

the sun had enough of shining her light on all of our crimes —
our little puerile wars, our nuclear toys, our climate ignorance
she had enough of growing our food and our plants,
and interrupting the fog and the rain to warm our skin
she was getting bored of setting in violet, purple dresses
without anybody taking the time to appreciate her beauty,
or of rising in wild pink and aqua skies of pure flame
to announce the inexplicable miracle of another day
she wasn’t a saint — she was a god like any jealous god
she demanded worship, recognition, humility, awe
instead we gave her the finger of indifference, preferring AI’s blue light
poring over our mobiles while she exploded in beauty above
so she hatched a vindictive plot — she would turn
inward, like an eclipse, go all introverted, like fog, like night
to see how long we would survive without her
would we be able to grow food and sustain life
with the weak blue light of social media?
would the Musks and Zuckerbergs of the world
replace the dynamic and crazy gods of the sky?
the sun knew better, and she would find a way
to make us pay for our failure of imagination
she would split and turn blue and black night — and heckle
the weak, far stars to dare match her brilliant light
