The Secret
A genuine phenomenon, or is manifestation merely a deception?

The world as she knew it completely changed for Rhonda. Following the launch of her book, The Secret, in 2006, the global impact was astonishing; selling over 35 million copies worldwide across 50 languages.
In the last 17 years, The Secret has spread over many continents, and slowly became more of a common knowledge than a secret. Influenced by a book by Wallace Wattles, ‘The Science of Getting Rich’, they both delve deep into the topic of belief and the pseudoscientific law of attraction.
“Your thoughts create your reality.”
The ultimate phenomenon
I first heard of the ‘Secret’ about 3 years ago. It was a YouTube video by Bob Proctor that introduced me to the power of thoughts. It was also the first time in my life I encountered a strange feeling — have you ever experienced someone talking to you and you think, “Yes, I do know this, so why is my life so shit?” moment?
I wasn't in a good place at the time. Going through a traumatic divorce and the loss of my home, I would have done anything to turn my life around. But because paying hundreds of dollars for a life coach was not an option, I went down the root of ‘thinking positive thoughts’. At the time, that was all I could afford.
According to Rhonda Byrne, there is a three-step process when it comes to manifesting your desired outcome: ask— believe — receive, referring to a quotation from the Bible:
“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” (Matthew 21:22)
From experience, I would say, believing plays the biggest part.
A lot of us pray and ask God, the Universe or whatever power we believe in to bring us our desires, but very few of us believe in ourselves.
If the saying is correct, and “You really are the creator of your own reality”, then the creation must start with you. No one else can do it for you.
Manifestation coaches state that the first step towards your new reality is choosing positive thoughts.

The power of positive thinking
According to The Secret, our mind is a very powerful tool. The principles of manifestation and the Law of Attraction go as far as saying that positive thoughts bring positive experiences into our lives, while negative ones will materialize in the form of negative events.
But this is nothing new. Ancient yogis believed that the mind has the power to shape reality. By cultivating positive thoughts, intentions, and visualizations, they claimed to influence the external world.
This philosophy aligns with the modern understanding of the law of attraction, suggesting that the mind plays a crucial role in shaping personal experiences.
Yogis believed in the existence of prana, the life force that flows through the body. By channelling and harnessing this vital energy through breath control (pranayama), they claimed to awaken dormant capacities within the mind.
The mastery of breath was seen as a key to unlocking the hidden power of the brain. A great example of this is Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing).
Aside from clearing the mind and promoting focus, which is needed for manifestation, Nadi Shodhana has been scientifically linked to improved cardiovascular health as well as treating asthma and relieving respiratory functions of postmenopausal women.

Are manifestation coaches the biggest scams of human history, or are they here to change the world one belief at a time?
As the global self-help industry reaches a worth over $45 billion in 2023, with spirituality and the Law of Attraction being amongst the top contributors, there is a suspicion however — could the sceptics be right, and we are all being hoaxed by manifestation coaches and sold a belief that complex issues, such as health or financial struggles are clearly attributed to one’s thoughts?
Could it be as simple as changing our thoughts to make all our troubles go away?
Could changing our lives be as simple as repeating positive affirmations to help us bring our desires into existence?
Did I manifest a better life simply by thinking positive thoughts?
Critics argue that the principles of “The Secret” lack scientific grounding. Nevertheless, the self-help library is growing day by day and contributors like Dr Joe Dispenza, who wrote several bestseller books on manifestation and the power of thoughts are clearly changing peoples’ lives for the better.
Yet, regardless of the evidence, the war between sceptics and believers is growing. While positive thinking and visualization can enhance motivation and goal-setting, critics maintain the belief that the universe doesn’t respond to thoughts in a literal sense.
“Everything is energy and that is all there is to it. Match the freqency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way.” (Albert Einstein)
Reality vs expectations
I manifested a whole new reality for myself after I first came across the Law of Attraction. But it wasn’t thinking positive thoughts, neither it was journalling that changed my life.
What yielded incredible results was understanding and aligning myself with the 5 principles of change.
There is no doubt that positive thoughts have a great impact on our outcomes both mental and physical.
There is countless evidence that shows how the Law of Attraction works and the real power of manifestation.
The question is, is it time we take The Secret more seriously and is the world ready for the real secret to be revealed?
Thank you for reading.
P.S: Do you believe in the Law of Attraction? Have you manifested a big dream of yours yet?
Much love,
D.
