The Second Day Of The Corona Lockdown In My Hometown

The measures are being tightened up again, but the seriousness of the situation has still not reached a lot of people.

Since yesterday, on 16.03.2020, comprehensive measures of the government led to a de facto lockdown in Hamburg, a lot has happened again. Read in my ongoing report on how the situation is on the second day.

Playgrounds closed

After the closure of public playgrounds has been ordered, the cordoning off now begins. A few minutes ago, the caretaker of our residential complex cordoned off the first playground in our street with barrier tape and put up a sign informing about the closure.

Parents immediately approached him from the neighborhood, who apparently have no understanding of this.

I have already observed the ignorance of parents towards the recommendations for social distancing today. The daycare centers have been closed since yesterday to prevent large gatherings of children.

Instead, some parents apparently think it is a good idea to invite numerous children from the neighborhood to their garden so that the little ones can play together.

This runs directly counter to the hoped-for effect of the daycare and school closures.

As understandable as it is that the parents want to give their children a carefree time, it is just as wrong to bring them together in large numbers outside the public facilities now.

Yes, it is exhausting to explain to children that they are not allowed to see their friends for a while now.

But it is necessary. Being a parent also means to assert oneself when necessary and to endure the stress that comes with it.

Restricted opening hours for restaurants

Restaurants and eating places in Hamburg are now only allowed to be open between six o’clock in the morning and six o’clock in the evening. This is still a generous regulation, as in other federal states, opening hours are already limited to three o’clock in the afternoon.

Although it has been announced that unbureaucratic support will be given to tradespeople and companies that get into financial difficulties as a result of the Corona crisis, it has not yet been clarified in detail who will receive how much money and how quickly and what the conditions will be.

After the clubs, bars, and discotheques, which have been completely closed since yesterday, the rest of the catering industry is now also feeling the full force of the crisis.

Authorities with limited public access

With immediate effect, there will be no more public access to finance and district offices. So if you want to apply for a new passport or speak to your clerk, you must now try to get through via the overloaded telephone lines.

These measures are designed to protect the employees of the authorities and to protect citizens who would otherwise crowd into the offices in large numbers.

Hoard purchases continue. Supply chains still work.

Also, today we could see many empty shelves again in the supermarket around the corner. The bottleneck with toilet paper, other hygienic articles, and noodles seems to be under control.

But many other products are still not available. There are more and more gaps in the shelves. But there is also a continuous refilling of goods.

According to the media, there are currently increasing traffic jams at some borders with Germany due to stricter controls. Should this problem worsen further, the feared delivery bottlenecks could still occur in the coming days.

Whether the supermarkets will still be able to stock enough goods next week seems questionable for the first time since the beginning of the crisis.

Number of proven infections up 20% since yesterday

After yesterday’s day ended with 260 proven infections for Hamburg, today, there are already 312 cases.

This corresponds to an increase of 20% in one day.

In Germany as a whole, the increase in reported cases was only just under 10% with 7273 cases yesterday and 7974 cases today.

Hamburg has therefore recorded an increase in cases of illness twice as high as the national average.

Against this background, a further tightening of social distance measures would be desirable.

I, therefore, assume that the lockdown will continue to be tightened in the coming days.
