Summary

The WHO has provided a recipe for individuals to create their own disinfectant during the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring availability for those in need.

Abstract

In response to the scarcity of disinfectants during the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released a guide for making homemade disinfectant. This guide is particularly useful for those working with vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, sick, or children. The recipe requires easily accessible ingredients, including ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerine, and distilled or boiled water. The homemade solution serves as an effective alternative to store-bought disinfectants, which have been in short supply due to panic buying. The DIY disinfectant is not only a cost-effective solution but also ensures that those who need it most have access to essential hygiene supplies.

Opinions

  • The author expresses frustration over the hoarding of disinfectants and other essential items like toilet paper and pasta, which has led to a shortage for those who genuinely need them.
  • There is a sense of responsibility and community care in the suggestion that people should only buy disinfectants if they need them, to ensure availability for high-risk groups.
  • The article conveys that making disinfectant at home is a practical and effective solution to the problem of shortages during the pandemic.
  • The author emphasizes the importance of safety when handling and storing homemade disinfectants, particularly around children.

Quick Guide: How You Can Easily Make Disinfectants Yourself According To A WHO Recipe

In most cases, washing your hands and following the general hygiene recommendations is quite sufficient. But in times of Covid-19, a disinfectant may also be necessary from case to case.

Unfortunately, besides toilet paper, pasta, and breathing masks, disinfectant is sold out almost everywhere at the moment.

For most people, this is not a problem, but if you work with the elderly, sick, or children, you want to make sure that you don’t get infected and above all that you don’t infect anyone.

That’s why it’s annoying that people who don’t need it buy up all the disinfectant supplies and so it’s not available to those who need it.

To remedy this situation, you can use a recipe that the WHO has published. You can use it to make an effective disinfectant yourself.

The recipe can be found here.

You need:

- A plastic spray bottle

- 833 milliliters 96 % ethanol or 752 milliliters 99,8 % isopropyl alcohol

- 42 milliliters 3% hydrogen peroxide

- 15 milliliters glycerine

- 110 milliliters of distilled water (if you use isopropyl alcohol instead of ethanol, you need 192 milliliters of distilled water). Instead of distilled water, you can also use boiled water.

First, you put the alcohol in your bottle. Then you add hydrogen peroxide and glycerine.

Then you fill it up with the water and close the bottle tightly.

Now you have to shake the mixture well, and then you can use your homemade disinfectant.

Effect

The ingredients fulfill different tasks. While alcohol is responsible for killing viruses and bacteria, hydrogen peroxide protects the liquid itself from contamination and makes it more durable.

The glycerine is added to protect the skin from drying out during application.

Attention! Keep safe from children.

If the fluid gets on mucous membranes or in the eyes, it can be very irritating. The alcohol also makes the liquid highly flammable.

So if you make this disinfectant yourself, make sure that children do not get their hands on it.
