The Road Less Travelled-A Series
Intro-Find Your Path to Discovery and Enjoyment
I am starting a series on the outdoors and adventure. I will periodically publish an account of my outings. Be it a walk, hike, ski outing, bike ride, or car ride.
As you know I love to be outdoors. That is well established. Whether it be cross country skiing, hiking, biking, or what I call just plain old walking, there is a common theme. Discovery. How about you?
Have you ever found yourself, when riding in a car, peeking at side roads, abandoned railroad beds, paths, etc.? Or is it just me? Even though I have lived in Central NY for over 40 years, in the same town and house, there are still roads I have not driven, trails not hiked, or skied, or biked. Where do they go? How are the views? Any old buildings or foundations to explore? Any history to learn?
There is plenty of history in the county which I live, which is true anywhere. There are old abandoned railroad beds, old canals, and a huge amount of NY State Forests and parks. There is always history. Some obvious and visible every day along the common routes. Some not so much. These opportunities are the ones I crave.
If you like the outdoors and adventure you get what I’m saying. During this time of Covid-19, this is something that can be done safely, especially in your local area. However, if you are physically unable to participate in outdoor activities, there is plenty of opportunity for discovery and adventure by car along with handicap accessible areas and trails.
What may be riskier during the pandemic is traveling to new areas to discover and enjoy. Our family typically spends a week each summer and/or fall in the Adirondack Mountains here in NY.
At 6 million acres, the Adirondack Park provides a lifetime of opportunity and discovery. By car, on foot, on skis, on water. It’s all there. Each year we discover more.
Sometimes when I go on an outing I am content to travel the familiar. Not too much thinking or unknowns, I know exactly what I’m in for be it good or bad.
But there are times when I want more. Something new. Undiscovered (at least by me).
So I encourage you to get out and discover. It is a great activity you can enjoy by yourself or with family.
What will you discover today? Stay tuned for my outing stories.
