The Rhyme of Fishy Pete (1893)

‘I came to know an octopus’ — Fishy Pete / Image Public Domain

I came to know an octopus

When The Sea Gazelle was wrecked.

He appeared beside our makeshift raft

Then climbed aboard our deck.

He was kind, which meant a lot to us

His tentacle held aloft

To show us all the way back home

Lest we find ourselves all lost.

We thanked our friend with eight handshakes

For there were eight of us aboard.

Then Gravy Davy, the assistant cook

Took up the Captain’s sword.

With eight swift strokes, we had seafood steaks

For a pleasant fishy supper

Then we each enjoyed a tot of rum

To wash down every sucker.

‘Course, I’m sad for our friend Octopus

After accepting such goodwill

For had we not spied land that day

We’d be on the high seas still.

Drifting with all hope lost to us

Under an unforgiving sun

But then, he was very tasty

Cooked in a lightly dusted crumb.

Friends! If you liked this modest work, & any of my others, a follow, clap, comment, & highlight goes a long way to help this artist accumulate enough for his next bottle of Madeira! MP!
