The Regret in Not Taking The First Step

You never know what wave your actions can start

Before starting my blogging streak on March 25 this year, my frequency was a joke. I only published when I achieved a milestone in life or wanted to write on a technical topic I found interesting.

Now, I am on day 56 of my 100 days blogging streak, and this is already motivating many other people to start with their ONE thing which they were holding back for so long!

Activities mainly are related to fitness and writing as I am paying attention to these areas. Few of my friends ( plus my elder brother ) started blogging on Medium, and they want to make it a regular habit (I have mentioned them here). A few friends started doing daily workouts and are planning to push to the morning time. Few of them have even begun investing in themselves by pursuing an online course according to their interest.

Wow! I am already impacting lives by the days!

One positive step can define a generation.

You’ve got to be proud of your craziness. As long as your actions are not hurting anyone, why are you afraid?

Killing fear and such strong emotions requires different kinds of approaches based on what triggered them. But if you ask from a lifelong learner like me, he will tell you to embrace the emotion, understand what they are trying to tell you and let your experience be your teacher.

If your curious attitude is honest and learning-driven, no one will be offended in the long term. And even if someone is, it is because negativity has suppressed the person’s ability to adapt to change. You are doing it, they are seeing it and they can’t believe a newbie like you is trying to change the status-quo!

You can’t change anyone’s mind, but with your actions, you can challenge their outdated beliefs, though. If there beliefs are wrong, let them learn the hard way. Do your work, and the shine will blind their negative attitude if you are worried about such reactions at all.

There is a lot of whiplash of perspectives when explaining your point of view to someone who is more experienced than you but he is doing something wrong. If they have a student mentality, then they will be humble enough to listen. If not, you will soon realise that you are wasting your time.

Free advice probably doesn’t work because of zero investment.

However experienced advice you receive, whether it is free from a friend or a professional, digestion will be hard because it will challenge your thinking in a way you never would have imagined. You might even stop talking to the “advice-giver” because he just dragged you to the mud with his honest opinion, which proved how wrong you were with your approach before the discourse with them.

Only a learner can live in both environments: with people smarter than him and also the with the dumber ones. A saturated person will prefer to spend time with people who are dumber and will never grow.

If no one is challenging your thought process like smart people, you are not improving at all. Call it the network effect if you want, it is real!

Taking the first step is an act of encouragement that we give to ourself.

Positive self-talk is one of the affirmations that will drive you to experiment with the action anyway. Even if you do not succeed in the first attempt, you will be more focussed next time because you know what doesn’t work.

Isn’t uncertainty reduced every time you practice the same task from the previous learning lessons? Your confidence increases, trust magnifies, and if this isn’t enough motivation to take the first step, then it even shows from the right community who is always watching you.

The world is in the hunt for talents like you if you are bold enough to show what you’ve got. Whether it is the first step or a series of actions, if you have executed it anyway, then you can’t deny this adage: “Actions spawn courage, not the other way around.”

This blog belongs to a series of posts I am publishing in this 100-days streak. Navigate to the end of article 22, for the references from day 23 onwards. If you would like to read the ones before day 22, here is the first one that documents them in the end.
