The Reason Your Stories Aren’t Getting More Views (Hint: It’s What We’ve All Suspected)
This article was influenced by a piece from Daniel T. that you can find here:
There have been reports from many creators on the platform that their views took a dive in February.
I think what most of us have suspected is that it has something to do with the algorithm.
But that’s difficult to prove.
The algorithm is mysterious, and I’m convinced we’ll never fully understand how it works. That’s okay because it’s Medium’s property and not ours.
But I do believe it has something to do with why so many writers experienced plummeting views last month.
Blaming the Algorithm Doesn’t Help Anything
It’s tempting to feel angry because of algorithms.
It feels like you’re following what the top writers say to do with ultimate precision, but only experience a tiny fraction of the results that they do.
But does playing the blame game help anyone? No. And it makes you seem whiny if you do it too often.
The better course of action is to take responsibility for the things we can influence and not give up.
Right?
Instead of working to try and please an algorithm, doesn’t it sound better to work at being a more consistent writer that works on writing engaging content?
The Next Move?
Once you decide you’re not going to blame-shift, you can start focusing on what will actually get you where you want to go.
That’s improving your craft, showing up even when you don’t feel like it, and pressing on even if your views and earnings are far away from where you want them to be.
Over time you build an audience and start gaining traction, even if it takes months.
One thing is for sure: you’re not going to reach your goals if you give up.
You have to keep going. We will reap from the seeds we plant eventually, even if it takes a lot longer than we would like.
