The PS VR2 Sales Pitch Has Improved in the Last 30 Days

Source: Playstation.com

Last month I wrote about the underwhelming sales pitch by Sony when it comes to their upcoming state-of-the-art PS VR2 gaming headset. That article was published around December 20th and one of the things I went over was my expectations for the, then, upcoming Consumer Electronic Show. Sony was set to headline their conference with the PS VR2, and while I wasn’t expecting much, I was hoping for something, anything, to make me excited for the new headset.

Enter Gran Turismo 7

I have been a Gran Turismo fan since the first game back in 1998. For those that don’t know Gran Turismo, it’s an addictive car racing franchise that puts the emphasis on car collecting as much as it does on the competition.

Every game in the series has taken up hours of my time, but the series has stumbled a bit in recent years. On PlayStation 4 we had Gran Turismo Sport, while it offered great racing, the limited focus on single-player content tainted it in the eyes of many.

Gran Turismo 7 is another stellar entry in the franchise. It offers an improved single-player experience over Sport and includes all its celebrated competitive online features.

However, the franchise has felt like it needed something more. Another technological leap to keep it on the cutting edge of racing games. Virtual reality is exactly what Gran Turismo has needed.

We did get a limited virtual reality experience with Gran Turismo Sport. The game received a patch for the original PS VR that allowed you to do time trials and 1 vs 1 races in VR. It was a great demo of what a full-fledged VR Gran Turismo could be, but it left a lot to be desired.

At the 2023 CES, Sony announced a day-one patch for Gran Turismo 7 on PS VR2. And this time it won’t be a small-scale experience, the entire game will be available to play in virtual reality.

I know Horizon: Call of the Mountain is being positioned as the showcase piece for PS VR2, but Gran Turismo 7 is arguably the biggest killer app for the device at launch.

It’s one of the marquee franchises for PlayStation and pairing it with the launch of the PS VR2 seems like a no-brainer, so it’s great to see Sony was able to make that happen.

There are a Ton More Games Coming Too

I still think the PS VR2 launch lineup suffers from the same problem it did when I originally wrote about it in December. A lot of the games being released are already available on more affordable options like the Meta Quest 2.

The difference now is that Sony has added a lot more options to the mix. Sure, it’s still filled with titles you can get elsewhere, but if you’re planning to dive into VR for the first time on your PlayStation 5, you will be spoiled for choice.

As of today, January 30th, about three weeks from launch, there are 49 games being released during the initial launch window. That number has risen by 19 since mid-December. Right now, as I’m typing this, IGN is hosting an event with Perp Games with new announcements for the PS VR2.

Virtual reality standouts like PS VR2 have been announced, and there are about 120 games in development with many set to release over the next year.

Albeit plenty of those games aren’t necessarily showcased pieces for the PS VR2. A lot of them are either PS VR upgrades, some for an additional upgrade fee, or games being ported over from Meta Quest 2. For the peripheral to truly be successful it’s going to need more software that will set it apart from the pack. We haven’t seen that yet, but if Sony can find launch success I am sure it will happen.

Still no Half-Life: Alyx

We haven’t heard anything from Sony or Valve regarding Half-Life: Alyx. It’s possible Sony wants to sit on this announcement for a while since their launch line-up is shaping up now. It could be a summer announcement for fall 2023 or maybe it’s something we can hope to expect in 2024.

Then again, maybe it’s not coming at all.
