The Power of Writing!

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” — Steven King

Today writing is so much more powerful than ever before especially with the emergence of social media and publishing platforms such as Medium. It allows you to convey your message and ideas easily by writing your own words in an elegant way.

As humans, we have always used writing as a way of communicating with each other throughout civilizations until it has reached our modern times.

Despite writing evolving into different forms yet its power and influence have continued to grow more than before as we relied more and more upon it to express our personal and political views.

Writing is so powerful that it could change the fate of people and nations. A great example of this could be the late great author, poet, and Islamic thinker from Egypt Sayyid Qutb. He wrote 24 books and more than 500 articles, but one of his books called Ma’alim fi-l-Tariq (Signposts in the Road 1964) got him in trouble with the Egyptian military government in the 1960s just eight months after he was released from prison. He was re-arrested, faced trial, and later executed because he simply wrote a book.

I am not trying to scare you in any way, but that is the harsh reality some writers have faced in the past and some others are still facing today whether its imprisonment or execution. And that’s all due to the power of writing.

Just like when you write a book, a blog post, an article or even a tweet can give you the chance to gain fame, followers, and wealth, it could also take you to the opposite direction of misery, death, and destruction.

The Purpose of Writing

Everyone writes for a different reason, some of us write because it's our hobby, others write because we want to earn a living while some of us write to inspire and change the lives of our fellow humans for the good.

Whatever purpose you want to write for is your choice but I just have one piece of advice for you “keep on writing” because writing has an immense power that changes you first before anyone else.

The sheer amount of discipline you develop from sitting down to write your own thoughts every single day in the form of well-written sentences that make meaning to the reader is a pure class of art.

It is proof that you are a creative person who can change the invisible dreams inside your head into visible words that can be read and understood by thousands or even millions.

My Personal Experience in Writing.

I have been recently started 30 days writing challenge of my own since the beginning of this month. Believe me, the first ten days alone have been so remarkable. Whenever I write a new article out of nowhere, it feels like a dream has come true. I also feel like I have really created something important by hitting the publish button when I finish it and it's ready to be shared with you.

Writing is making a huge difference in my life so far just like reading did in the last two years. I am learning to be more disciplined than ever before by first starting to write a post, then finishing and publishing my article on deadline every day.

That never existed before. Procrastination has always been dominating everything I use to do, now that’s over. The effect of writing is now spreading to other parts of my daily life. I no longer delay anything I want to do or achieve my daily goals.

Writing is also giving me the power to express my thoughts and share my own personal experience with the rest of the world in the best way possible.

A simple demonstration for this is you, my dear reader. You are now thousands of miles away from I am writing this post, we have never met in our lives, yet here we are connecting through my writing. That is powerful.

Having already tasted only some of the writing power, I have set a long term personal goal to become one of the best writers here on Medium and also to become a self-published author in the next coming few years.

Now that I have mentioned writing as one of my long term goals, you can see one of the articles I wrote recently about short and long term goals and the importance of planning well for the next 10 years of your life.

Final Thoughts

If you would have asked about the possibility of me writing a few words let alone a complete article a few years ago, I would have told you I can’t because I always believed writing is difficult, but here I am at the beginning of my writing journey, enjoying every part of it and testing the power of writing in many different ways.

Being a writer today gives you the power to influence the opinions of millions of people around the world about a particular topic without you ever meeting them in real life. This is a power you can only get in writing, not anywhere or anything else.

Writing gives you the opportunity to earn your living without leaving the comfort zone of your home. Writing also gives you the opportunity to help millions of people around the world by inspiring them to do good things in their life.

With the world becoming more interconnected, and people realizing the unlimited power of writing, everything is possible now.

Seth Godin once said:

“Everyone should write a blog every day, even if no one reads it. There are countless reasons why it is a good idea and I can’t think of one reason it’s a bad idea.”

Thank you for your precious time.
