February Six World Photo Story Challenge: “Statues”

12th-century poet symbolizes female emancipation

I visited the flower show at the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens.

This year‘s theme was about the life and times of Basavanna, a 12th-century poet and philosopher who used his poems to spread social messages that spoke against gender and social discrimination.

But my photo is not about him. It is about Akka Mahadevi, a mystic, seer, poet, and social reformer in a time when women were not even allowed to attend school. She was a social and spiritual revolutionary in Karnataka during the twelfth century.

Let me tell you a little story about her. She was a Lord Shiva devotee. King Kaushika, who was the ruler at the time, fell in love with her–at first sight. She rejected him.

Kaushika did not give up. He threatened her and her family with grave consequences until she gave in. She agreed to marry him as long as he didn't force himself on her without her consent.

Well, he broke his promise. Mahadevi walked out on him. As she left the palace, Kaushika demanded that she return all her jewelry and expensive clothes. Unfazed, Mahadevi stripped to her skin and stepped out onto the streets, naked. Because of her intense devotion to Lord Shiva, her body was miraculously covered by thick black tresses.

She became a radical wandering saint-poet and settled in the famous Shiva temple at Srisailam. In 1160, she was consumed by a flash of light.
