The Power in The Sun, Moon, and Stars

A story of the power of love.

Sunset in Kingston Jamaica Image by Annelise Lords

Sisters Rose-Marie and Charmaine having lunch at Seafood Galore. The best seafood restaurant in New York. Sitting with a view of the Hudson River, Charmaine raises her brows when her sister ordered Lobster truffle Mac and Cheese. She bites onto her lips reminding herself why she bought her here. Ordering a Fruit and Nut Spinach Salad for herself.

They chit-chat throughout the meal, on the view, families, what’s happening in the world, and about their private life. The waiter cleared their table and returned for the check. Charmaine hands him her debit card, and said, “Take a ten per cent tip, I feel good today.”

Rose-Marie smiles, then Charmaine hit her with the first ball, “I heard that you refused the Managerial position at Lawson’s Technology. Why?”

Caught off guard, Rose-Marie shrugged her shoulders, pouts, her eyes out the window, looking at the waves as they sway to and fro saying, “It’s not for me.”

“Really?” Charmaine said. “You went through six years of college to get a master’s degree in Computer Science and sat on your degree, refusing to use it. Why don’t you want a job?”

Rose-Marie looks at her sister, swaying her eyes, thinking then said, “There are millions of people in our world who have degrees and don’t use it.”

The waiter returns her debit card, thanked her for the tip and the service.

“Come on,” Charmaine said, “I want to show you something.”

They walk out of the restaurant, along the Manhattan Bridge Boardwalk. The sun was glaring back at them from a 225-degree handle. As they reach the rails, Charmaine points into the sky, “Look at the sun,” she said, hitting her with another ball. “It has a job to do. It rises every morning, energizing our bodies with vitamin D. It provides warmth from the cold. It aids farmers with their crops and plant growth. The people who wash their clothes rely upon the sun to dry them. The power of the Sun is now used as solar energy as Electricity for homes, Heating, Ventilation, Lighting, Transportation, etc.,

When it finished its job for this side of our world, it goes down and rises in another country, repeating its task. The moon does its job too for the night, giving light, guidance out of the darkness, and more. The stars have their job too. They give light, they guide and for the ones who believe in wishes, it never fails them. They are reliable to humans and our world. They give, don’t you think you owe yourself the chance to give back something. Plus, how long do you think your inheritance will last with your high cost of living.”

Breathing heavily, Rose-Marie took her cellphone from her pocket and dials, wait for an answer, then said into the phone, “Ann, tell Carla, that Rose-Marie Miller will take the job,” hanging up she looked at her sister and said, “You know, you are a horrible, horrible sister. How could you be comparing my laziness and lack of ambition to the Sun, Moon, and the Stars? No humans can do what they do. Girl, you know no one can compete with them.”

Charmaine’s phone beeps, glancing at the screen, it was a text from Carla Sinclair that reads, “home run!” Smiling, while putting her phone away, then reaching out to hug her little sister saying, “That’s what big sisters are for, and you owe me a lobster lunch.”

Rose-Marie hugs her back saying, “You know the route to my heart and soul more than anyone in my life. You are my star. You never failed me. Thank you for that.”

Every one of us has that one person in our lives who knows what to do to push us in the right direction and never fails us. Reach out and thank them today.
