An Interview With Britt H.

As an inspiring source of emotively complex, authentic writing and storytelling you have captured many readers’ hearts. Can you tell us a bit about your background, how you came across Medium and how your path looked like?
BRITT: Despite having severe anxiety disorder, I used to manage my own beauty salon business for several years. Sadly, I had to let it go due to a combination of personal and external challenges.
During that period, I did a fair amount of writing and was gaining some momentum. However, I had to put a halt to it when my mental health issues became too overwhelming.
As I started feeling better, I decided to give Medium a try during one of their writing contests, even though I didn’t win anything. It was a fresh beginning for me. But just when things appeared to be improving, my condition took an unexpected downturn.
I found myself unable to do anything, not even writing or reading. However, things have been slowly getting better since then.
How would you describe your journey before and after you discovered Medium? Were there a lot of changes in your experience and how did those changes manifest in your day-to-day process?
BRITT: I’ve always felt like an outsider in everything I do and everywhere I go, but writing has provided me with a small, welcoming corner where I can truly be myself.
I was writing primarily on Instagram before I was on Medium, but the social media platform was overwhelming for me. Most people I knew on Instagram preferred scrolling through pictures of vacations, outfits of the day and selfies while I spent most of my days in my pajamas with unkempt hair in a tiny space. I may have the words to share but I lacked the interesting pictures to show the world.
I discovered a supportive community of fellow writers who shared my passion here. Their lives and stories intrigued me, and I learned valuable lessons from their experiences, immersing myself in a world of thought-provoking content.
This shift significantly altered my daily routine. I started dedicating more time to writing, researching, and crafting meaningful content. It gave my life a renewed sense of purpose and connected me with individuals who valued the potency of words and ideas over superficial matters.
Writing evolved into my sanctuary, a place where I could express myself authentically, free from the constraints of conforming to societal expectations.
You have written a lot of heartfelt poetry and continue to do so. What is your creative process when you craft personal and often intimate poems? Can you share some insights into your state of being when you write poetry?
BRITT: My creative process often begins with drawing from my own experiences. While some of my poetry may be fictional, there’s always a piece of me in each piece. It might not be the best method, but it’s the only way that I could manage for now, purging every emotion until I’ve laid it bare on the page.
It’s an agonizing process. There are stories I hesitate to write about, as I had to re-live my own traumatic experiences and it often takes me a long while to summon the courage to confront them. Often, I write with a mixture of fear, anger and sadness.
In fact, there are many unfinished drafts in my portfolio. These are pieces that I started but couldn’t bring myself to complete them. To put it simply, when I write these personal and intimate pieces, I’m in a state of emotional turmoil. It’s a messy process, tears and tissues everywhere.
I write in hope that maybe I could find at least one person to read/listen to what I’ve to say and that someone would understand how I felt.
What experiences have shaped your perception of the world the most and how are those experiences reflected in your craft? Are there any particular events or moments that had a big impact on you and your creativity that you would like to share with the readers?
BRITT: My worldview is a canvas painted by the baggage I carry, and I find relief in translating these burdens into words. My life’s journey, including both my actions and my hesitations, has left a lasting mark on me. These experiences frequently find their place within my writings, shaping the undercurrents of emotion and themes woven throughout my work.
The crossroads I’ve encountered, along with the weight of my choices still haunt my mind leaving me with uncertainty with the fear of making the wrong choice.
I may not consider myself a wise person capable of guiding others to be better, but I do believe that I can serve as an example of what one should avoid doing. I hope that individuals who have confronted similar struggles or choices can relate to my work and potentially glean lessons from the mistakes I’ve made throughout my journey.
As a fellow cat lover — can you tell us about your connection to animals and how your feline friends inspire you creatively — if so, in what way?
BRITT: I often find myself engaged in conversations with my cats, creating playful dialogues for them in my mind. It’s a delightful and imaginative exercise that brings me joy and allows me to view the world from a different perspective. My cats’ unique personalities and behaviors provide endless inspiration for these whimsical exchanges.
Beyond that, my cats serve as soothing companions during moments of anxiety or stress. I would seek solace in hugging my cat, Kimchi. It’s said that the gentle vibrations produced by a cat’s purring can have a calming effect and promote healing. I’ve experienced this firsthand, as Kimchi’s purring has often helped ease my anxiety and allowed me to regain my function.
While nobody may laugh at my jokes, my cats’ endearing behaviors provide ample material for my craft. It’s almost like I could start a tabloid magazine featuring cat’s gossips.
Can you tell us about the challenges you encounter when interacting with the world online versus when interacting offline? How are those two worlds different from your point of view and where do they overlap — and in what way?
BRITT: Online interaction offers a sense of safety and a barrier that I often find comforting. It allows me to engage with others while maintaining a protective distance. I write better than I speak, which makes real-life interactions somewhat daunting for me. Speaking in person can be a challenge, as I often struggle to articulate my thoughts as clearly and eloquently as I can when I write.
Online interactions provide me with a platform where I can carefully craft my words and convey my thoughts without the pressure of immediate responses.
Regardless of the medium, the core of any interaction is the connection between individuals.
As a book-author, you have delved into the realms of the metaphysical. Do you want to share a bit about your works ‘Dialogue with God: The Confession’ and ‘Questions Every Christian Should Ask Themselves’? What can readers expect when diving into your literature and what was your creative process like?
BRITT: I had always questioned if I was good enough or if my efforts were sufficient for redemption. These thoughts led me to seek guidance from a priest, who introduced me to the teachings of Saint Augustine. But archaic English is quite challenging for me to understand it fully within such short period of time. I made numerous references to comprehend its content fully. Eventually, I undertook the ambitious task of translating the entire book and “Dialogue with God: The Confession” was born.
The second book, “Questions Every Christian Should Ask Themselves” also relates to my spiritual journey, specifically my first confession. This experience was a daunting one for me. The guidance provided by the church, while valuable, felt somewhat general and insufficient for the depth of self-reflection I desired.
In response, I began asking a myriad of questions based on Christian teachings. The questions delved into deeply personal and emotional territories, often challenging me to confront uncomfortable truths about myself.
The book expanded beyond its initial Christian focus. While a small part of the book was dedicated to faith, the rest was universally adaptable to all. This process of self-reflection, sparked by the questions, enabled readers to delve deep into their inner selves and attain a more profound comprehension of their beliefs, actions, and motivations.
Besides being a gifted writer sharing your emotional depth with the world, you are also a talented designer — and you have a great passion for Japan. Do you plan on creating more Japan-related designs or designs in general in the future? What other creative hobbies are you pursuing at the moment or planning to pursue?
BRITT: Absolutely, I have plans to grow my collection of Japanese art prints in the future. It’s a passion of mine.
Another creative pursuit I’m exploring is cooking. I’m in the process of learning more about Japanese cuisine, and I hope to document my cooking journey and compile it.
I have some challenges when it comes to documenting the process, as I don’t have all the necessary equipment so I often have to wait for my partner to return home from work just to borrow his camera phone for capturing the dishes I prepare. Another limitation is our tiny kitchen, which only has one induction cooker.
I’m determined to make it work with whatever I can manage for now. I’m in the early stages of planning how to expand and present this project properly in the future.
What are your plans for the future? Are there any specific creative outlets that you have in mind you want to try out, specific topics you aim to write about, stories you are eager to share with the world, collaborations you want to embark on?
BRITT: I have a specific project in mind, but I don’t think it’s suitable for a broad audience. It’s more of a personal passion project. You might have come across “The Haunting of the Unholy Elders”.
My intention is to dig deeper into this incident, conduct investigations, and interview relevant religious figures and experts. I’m aware that this endeavor will be challenging and may never reach completion. It could also be considered controversial, and I expect to encounter closed doors and rejection along the way. However, my primary goal is to connect the dots and, if possible, prevent any further individuals from falling victim to this generational mind control practice.
I’m also eager to engage in collaborations with various individuals from diverse backgrounds. I’m open to exploring meaningful new creative outlets and topics. While I may need some additional time and space to fully embrace these opportunities, I hope that any collaboration I embark upon will be a fulfilling and enriching experience, ultimately delivering content that won’t disappoint our audience.
