Summary

The web content discusses the defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, detailing potential jury verdicts, the public's perception influenced by the trial, and the broader implications for both parties.

Abstract

The article titled "The People Vs. Amber Heard" delves into the high-profile defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. It outlines the nature of Depp's 50 million lawsuit against Heard for her op-ed on domestic violence, and Heard's 100 million countersuit alleging Depp's team called her abuse claims a hoax. With the trial nearing its end, the piece presents three possible jury outcomes: a verdict in favor of Depp, a verdict in favor of Heard, or both parties losing their claims. Despite the undecided legal outcome, Depp's team has seemingly succeeded in shaping public opinion, portraying Depp as a victim and Heard as an aggressor. This shift in public sentiment is evidenced by a surge in Depp's fan support, celebrity endorsements, and increased sales of Dior's cologne, Depp's endorsement. Moreover, organizations and social media trends reflect a strong inclination towards Depp, while Heard's allegations of harassment and threats highlight the other side of the story. The article also provides external links to further readings on the trial's outcomes and personality traits that may contribute to exploitation.

Opinions

  • Depp's legal team has effectively used the trial to portray Heard as a liar and an aggressor, suggesting that Depp is the true victim.
  • Public opinion, as reflected on social media and through various endorsements, heavily favors Johnny Depp, with trends like #JusticeForJohnnyDepp gaining significant traction.
  • The article implies that Depp's team's strategy has been successful in clearing his name, regardless of the financial compensation he may receive.
  • Amber Heard's counter-narrative, which includes claims of daily harassment and death threats, suggests that she is also a victim in this high-profile dispute.
  • The author emphasizes the importance of considering both sides of the story, acknowledging that each side deserves to be heard amidst the media circus surrounding the trial.
  • The article suggests that the trial's outcome could have broader implications for both Depp and Heard's careers and public images.

What started out as a straightforward defamation suit between exes quickly blew up into a full-blown media circus and arguably one of the most popular topics on the internet. It’s become almost impossible to scroll through social media without coming across multiple fresh posts about the case daily.

Depp filed a defamation suit against Heard for $50 million because of her 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post about domestic violence. He claims that by her posing as a victim of domestic violence, though the piece did not mention him by name, the result was an insinuation that damaged his career and reputation.

Heard, on her part, has filed a countersuit claiming $100 million because she says Depp defamed her when his team labeled her abuse allegations as “a hoax.”

3 possible outcomes of jury deliberations

As the trial winds down, when we consider the possible outcomes of the 7 member jury’s deliberations, we come up with the following scenarios:

1. The jury finds for Johnny Depp in which case they can award him the full $50 million (or any other amount).

2. As the jury will also be deliberating on the Amber Heard countersuit, it is possible that they instead deliver a verdict in her favor. If this happens, she is in for a big payday of her own — $100 million big — or any other amount as the jury may decide.

3. Finally, as pointed out by entertainment lawyer, Michael Mandell, a scenario also exists where Depp not only fails to prove his claim but Heard also loses her counterclaim.

The outcome Depp's team have already achieved

From the beginning, Depp made it clear it was not about just the money. His legal team said as much when they declared in the original suit, “Mr. Depp brings this defamation action to clear his name.” So Depp’s side has piled on the evidence before the jury to paint Heard as not only a liar but an aggressor and their client as a victim.

In this regard, Depp seems to have already won as far as his legion of loyal fans are concerned. To them the case has exposed Heard as a serial liar and aggressor, and everything they see and hear from the courtroom goes to confirm what a horrible person she is.

That's not all:

  • The secret recordings she made and portions she then leaked all prove her propensity to bait Depp and get him into compromising positions. They are all, therefore, further testament to her horrible nature.
  • Many celebrities including Depp’s ex-partners, co-stars and others have openly lent their support to him with one in particular going as far as to declare Heard “a liar from day one.”
  • Signatories to a petition seeking his return as Jack Sparrow to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are approaching a million.
  • Mission NGO an international non-profit organization with a network covering 150 countries that support women and children all over the world against abuse has publicly expressed its “compassion for Johnny Depp in this bad page of his personal history.” This was contained in a public statement issued by the organization’s founder, Valeria Altobelli.
  • Dior, stuck with and kept Depp as its brand ambassador. And it seemed grateful fans of the star were showing their appreciation when Dior’s cologne sales went up and the hashtag #ThankYouDior started making the rounds on Twitter.
  • Milani Cosmetics released a TikTok contradicting Amber Heard's camp’s claim that she used their Conceal+Perfect All-in-One Correcting Kit to hide her bruises saying that that kit wasn’t available then. The video has been viewed over 5 million times.
  • According to entertainment news site, WeGotThisCovered, Universal Picture is one major studio that is showing enthusiasm to work with the talented but now struggling actor.
  • Across social media platforms public opinion seems to be heavily in favor of Depp. On TikTok, while the hashtag #IStandWithAmberHeard has gotten over 8 million views, #JusticeForJohnnyDepp’s numbers are in the region of 15 billion.

2 sides to every story

Support for Johnny Depp has grown since this trial and show no sign of slowing down. However, there are two sides to every story and in the interest of fairness each side deserves to be heard and considered especially by those of us who would exercise our right to voice opinions and (or) judgement.

“I am harassed, humiliated, threatened every single day. Even just walking into this courtroom, sitting here in front of the world, having the worst parts of my life, things that I’ve lived through, are used to humiliate me. People want to kill me and they tell me so every day. People want to put my baby in the microwave and they tell me that. Johnny threatened — promised me — that if I ever left him, he’d make me think of him every single day that I lived.” -Amber Heard
