The People on the Bus

Random poetic thoughts

That’s definitely not a bus in Greece — nothing’s broken and there’s no graffiti on the seats!/ Photo by Ina Carolino on Unsplash

It’s already ten minutes to eight The sun is shining and the people run Some of them look like they’re already late Time is cruel, it stops for none

I found an empty seat — what a relief! For the next 75 minutes I won’t move Some passengers shake their heads in disbelief I wish commuting here would improve

Seven stops later and I’m lost in thought Through my headphones the music is a blessing The bus is already full and the passengers are distraught An older lady says that this is very distressing

Someone shouts that they’re squashed like a sardine I look out the window and focus on the view I wonder about the many things this bus has seen As more people try to squeeze their way through

Just before the 18th stop everyone is quiet They accepted their fate It’s still not the day that they’ll riot Some silently worry that they’ll be late

We’re now close to the 30th stop Just six more to go It’s so quiet you could hear a pin drop And I just go with the flow

Finally I have arrived at my stop I’m grateful that I had a seat A pigeon flies above a rooftop And I’m ready to cross the street

Once a week I have to take the bus to go to another municipality that is about 90 minutes away from where I live. The bus makes 36 stops until it gets there.

During one of those commutes I wrote my poem “Guess Who!”. Today I wasn’t in a playful mood, I just wanted to observe and write about it.

I find that there are many interesting thoughts that come to me when I observe the people on the bus. Their behaviors, how they communicate their frustration…

Sometimes there are people who capture my interest and I try to imagine a story about them. Other times I see people who look worried or sad, and I wish I could tell them that everything’s gonna be alright.

When I get to my destination, I usually reward myself with some iced coffee. Even though my commute is exhausting, I try to make the best out of it each time.
