The Other Shoe Falls
Free Verse Poem — Anxiety and Expectations
And then just like that, we are monsters ready to devour one another’s souls I’ve warned myself before don’t get too comfortable — stay vigilant I should know by now that good things don’t last for bad people like me And I must be horribly bad — I’ve been picking up shoes my entire life This time it is merely a loafer a medium-sized nondescript piece of leather It is the steel-toed boots that worry me Those larger-than-life, metal-bearing kick-you-in-the-ass boots — they crush hearts Mine’s got more dents than any one heart should bear I’ve become the master of shoe sightings I see one, sitting comfortably its mate nowhere to be found And then the search begins — Why must I look? I cannot seem to leave it be The other shoe simply must be somewhere — So I wait, sitting on my hands pins and needles digging into my flesh There is no comfort here, just panic And then…plop! the other red stiletto pierces my heart
