The One Thing that Perfects my Self-care routine

It’s weirdly fulfilling and not what you’d expect

Just over a year ago, I was buried in zero-waste blogs and TikToks trying to find the best ways to waste less. I came across things I honestly wouldn’t consider, such as family cloth, if you do this, great for you, in our family, we are pretty set with our fantastic 100% recycled TP from Who Gives A Crap.

But anyway this isn’t about zero-waste switches, please bear with me.

In the midst of this zero-waste mission, our family has made a lot of switches to hopefully improve the fate of this dear planet we reside on, but the switch that had the biggest impact on me personally was switching to a safety razor. I went through the ‘fu%k it maybe I’ll just not shave then!’ for a short time but realised it wasn’t right for me.

Before the switch, both my partner and I used those 5 blades disposable “Men’s” Gillette razors (to avoid the ridiculous Pink Tax on women’s razors).

So you might be thinking hang on lady…

What does this have to do with self-care?

Everything! My ache to be more environmentally aware was deeply embedded into everything I did. I did literally weeks of research on how to use a safety razor. And for the record, there isn’t a huge amount of information out there for specific not facial female use.

On Reddit, there was information somehow both helpful and scary! The internet made safety razors sound hugely good for the environment, while simultaneously sounding dangerous. But I managed to glue all the information together with help from a Lovely Lady Barber and gave it a shot!

If you are interested in a collection of tips on using safety razors for women please let me know! I’d be glad to help someone not have to wade through all the junk I had to.

Using one 💯 perfected my self-care routine.

How?

Being a mother of two with a part-time job and study, my self-care is crazy disjointed. No complaints, It still happens anywhere it fits. Shaving used to be a hurried endeavour I did while half asleep.

On the other hand, my safety razor routine is unhurried; Relaxing and refreshing.

Using the time to really appreciate the casual magic in the fluffy shaving cream or just time to let thoughts ebb and flow.

Making them environmentally friendly switch to a safety razor has forever changed my care routine. I truly enjoy every second.

Each week I set aside 45 minutes alone to shave (with my glasses on as I’m a bit wonky without them). In this time all I do is shave. Not shower, not listening to music nothing but shave. It is pure unadulterated magic.

After I wash off I feel nothing but calm refreshment. Like I’ve reset my internal hard drive.

Takeaway

Now if you think this all sounds a bit nuts then so be it. This is how I perfected my self-care routine and how I actively meditate and work to reset each week if not more often.

Again if you’d like to know more about safety-razor use, let me know in the responses! :)

I hope you enjoyed this little snippet of self-care suggestions.
