The Making Of Our Minds Through Fiction

When we read fiction we can see inside the mind of another in a way that we can not in the real world. This helps us develop our empathy all while we enjoy a story.

The various ways that characters interact, and even their own personal mindscapes and ways of thinking are places that we can sink into, attitudes and impressions that we not only enjoy looking at but practice ourselves as we follow along with them.

This means that the type of fiction we read, particularly the characters and their worldviews are influential in shaping our own.

As we spend time with them they become a part of us.

Every character of every book is a little different. If we journey with Harry potter and Ron and Hermine, our journey and in turn our mind, will be different than if we journey with James Bond or George Beard and Harrold Hutchins or Zack Freeman.

And it’s not just books, although they are a probably the best medium for getting inside the characters minds. We also make our minds as we watch Dexter, or Total Drama, or The InBESTigators, or Friends.

And as we journey with our favourite fictional characters we will find that we are a little different ourselves too for having done so.
