The Magical Spell of Nature
We can invite magic into our lives every day.

Today I was so inspired by an amazing book I was able to get from the library right before our library closed for the lockdown here in Oregon. We are able to keep our books until the library reopens, so I decided to take another look at this book: “Romancing the Ordinary: A Year of Simple Splendor” by Sarah Ban Breathnach. It is a beautiful book that is organized by months of the year. She has a couple of sections on magic in the month of April that caught my attention today.
I love how she talks about magic, nature and the universe so freely in this book. She weaves in ways in which we can enjoy what’s all around us in our homes and gardens which seem ordinary but are really quite magical. This is especially important for the grand majority of us who are in lockdown right now. There is a section where she talks about rituals that we do normally, like dressing up, wearing a perfume or cologne, putting bouquets in our homes and lighting candles for dinner that can be considered magical spells.
If you have an important meeting, do you wear a special outfit or a favorite piece of jewelry or even try to schedule the meeting for a specific time of day? You’re unconsciously casting a success spell. When you arrange a bouquet of flowers for your home’s foyer, simmer cinnamon on the stove in the winter, set out bowls of intoxicating rose potpourri in the summer, or light candles at the dinner table, you are unconsciously casting spells (called atmospheres) to make your home more inviting.
I love this idea! As I finished my work I headed outside to the back garden this afternoon to enjoy the beauty of nature. I find my garden so magical, especially this time of year. Everything is blooming, emerging, changing, growing and becoming. It all seems so magical every single day. Every day there is something new to see. Every day I bring new flowers indoors to enjoy. I am casting a spell of nature on my home. A spell of beauty, of comfort of abundance. These are the things that I want to invite into my life, may it be so.
Today I got to witness my little patch of lilies of the valley emerge and take shape! They are now all blooming and their scent is simply breathtaking! It is a sweet perfume that you can smell even as you start to open the gate to walk past. I was drawn to them and their natural magic today as I knelt to the ground to smell their sweet blooms. They only bloom once a year, so this is the opportunity to take in their spell of beauty, of resilience and of living in the present moment.
As I write this I am dreaming of the most beautiful bouquet that I will create today as I plan one more walk out in the garden before coming in to make some dinner and settle in for the evening. I will cast a spell of calm, delight and illumination in my home today by bringing some nature in to work her magic on all of us. We will enjoy these delights and revel in their beauty.
I love what is said about exactly what a spell is in the book:
A spell is an organized desire passionately, creatively, personally sent out into the Universe through words and ritual-a three-dimensional prayer that engages all your senses.
I believe that we all cast spells through sharing our gifts with the world. We create magic each day with our hopes, dreams and the love we give to the world. By sharing your writing, your art, your poetry, your song, your dance, your healing and any other passions and gift that you have, you are inviting magic into the world for all to enjoy.
Cast some magical spells out into the universe of your own today, through whatever catches your fancy and whatever makes your heart sing! I love how the author expresses that spells are creative catalysts in this passage:
Because the Universe is magical and because you are nothing less than Its personal expression of that magic, spells can be creative catalysts meant to shift the energetic boundaries of what’s possible in your life. But to tap into the Power, you’ve go too stop thinking in cliches. Forget hocus-pocus, abarcabadra and kaboom and begin transforming the world’s “Double, double toil and trouble” with your passionate “Blessed be!”
Go out and cast your magic today! Nature is waiting for you with her beauty all around you right now. Take time to smell the sweet scents and bring in some flowers of your own!
What magical spells will you cast today?
With lots of love and light,
