LONELINESS | VULNERABILITY | FRIENDSHIP

The Loneliest Kind of Lonely?

The hardest part was hitting publish. But it was worth it!

It was the middle of the night. I couldn’t sleep!

Earlier in the day, I had been writing a series of blog posts and something was nagging at me. The subject for one of my columns was “Being Real.” I had argued the point for being vulnerable. You know, willing to open up to others about our feelings and anxieties.

Then it hit me. I was anything but vulnerable. “Poker Face Tim” does not do vulnerable!

All alone in the middle of the night, I decided to reach out to a private Facebook group who knew the kind of stuff I was working on and be vulnerable.

The subject of my post was Warning: Vulnerability Alert. Surprisingly, the post was EASY to write. I shared a BIG win from the day but I also shared a very vulnerable moment.

The HARDEST part was hitting publish! I received some of the most heartfelt responses encouraging me to stay on the path I was pursuing. One person shared a YouTube link to a song by Mama Cass Elliot, “Make Your Own Kind of Music.” One of the verses in the song stopped me cold,

You’re gonna be knowing the loneliest kind of lonely.

In the context of the song, the loneliest kind of lonely is the emotion felt by those who dare to do their own thing, who dare to make their own kind of music.

I realized that was a true statement but it wasn’t The Truth. Because it’s ONLY true if you stay in your cocoon and don’t allow anyone else in.

How can I make that claim? I had just proved it. I had been lonely. However, by being vulnerable to a group of friends, I had traded the loneliest kind of lonely in for Support, Encouragement, and Camaraderie.

Daily Doable: You don’t have to feel the loneliest kind of lonely. Seek out a friend or group of friends and be vulnerable! Just like my group of friends, you will be amazed at the people who will understand what you are going through and will give you the support you need.

This Inspire Point and Daily Doable were brought to you by Tim Maudlin. Please allow me to introduce myself.
