WINTER | SAINT NICOLAS | CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

The Last Thing I Wanted to Do

Was what I asked for

A few days ago, I told Mom I wanted to decorate the Christmas tree this year.

We haven’t done that in a few years, since that time my obsessively compulsive mother (don’t quote me on that, or I’ll get in trouble) threw away our former synthetic tree. She says it was rugged and old, but I know how much she likes to throw stuff out.

That’s why it came as a surprise for Mom when both my father and I said we wanted a Christmas tree after a few years without one.

It dawned on me that Dad and I are more similar than both of us like to admit, although we have divergent personalities. None of us believe my mother when she tells us that.

She complained a bit about our request, but she set out to make it happen for her boys.

The last few days, Mom’s been on leave from work. So she had lots of time on her hands for a Christmas haul.

Yesterday evening, when I came back home, she was waiting for me. All I wanted was to take a short shower, change into my pajamas, eat something fast, and hop straight on Medium to write my evening article.

But no, Mom had another idea. I found her with all the gadgets on the table, telling me we have work to do and I should stay in my work clothes until we’re done.

“But Mom, can’t we do this (shit) tomorrow? I’m so not in the mood now!”

“No can do! You asked for it, so don’t give me that. We have to set up the outside lights too. What if it snows tomorrow?”

She was more excited than me! 🙄

And guess what? It snowed the next day. As much as I hate to say this, Mom was right.

I had to endure her nagging and indications as we set out the outside lights and decorated the tree, but it was all worth it in the end.

Despite my complaints and me stumbling and hitting my toes in all the stuff Mom spread around the house, when Dad came home later, he loved the setting too.

I was a bit puffy-cheeked due to my mother’s shenanigans, but she promised to appease me the next day with candies and other goodies.

How dare she? I’m a grown-up now. She better get me something good! As an adult, I have standards! 🤷

And she delivered. Today (a few days ago by now), she sent me this picture when I was on my way back home.

Pizza for dinner? Are you kidding me? Sign me up for that ASAP! There are some things you’re never too old for!

She messed up with the tree candies, though. She bought some filled with jello, which aren’t my favorites.

I popped a few in my mouth and expressed my discontent. Then I called the expert to order the good stuff. Dad said to leave it to him, and he brought home another batch.

December 5 was like a preview of Christmas. It was Saint Nicolas Day, after all. If I were still a child, I would have polished my winter boots and placed them by the door so that Saint Nicolas could place some sweets inside.

Do you guys have Saint Nicolas in your country? If so, happy belated Saint Nicolas Day, everybody!
