The Irresistible Magic of the Night

Poetry that will bend your heart — The Lark poetry competition — runner-up poem

There is something mystical about the tenuous night, something fragile and soothing, mysterious and dangerous, but even if I stretch the velvet sky and touch the tethered stars I will never feel anything like the boundless love you pull from me.

It makes me feel alive.

If I reach for the textured moonlight or kiss the galaxies that swoon and swirl like some enticing spice that wraps itself around the tongue, I will never come close to describing the essence of your love.

The kind of love so real, so sublime it splatters like raindrops in the ripples of shadows on the pavement, leaving the ferocious world behind.

But why is life so cruel? Why do the miles separate us now? My soul feels bent. I miss your face your touch your calm as the sweetness of nightfall blankets an empty sky.

Grace notes: This poem is a personal, poetic love letter to the one I love. Now we are involved in a long-distance relationship, which is draining and frustrating. Love may be beautiful, but life is tough and cruel sometimes, and I am tired of dealing with obstacles in my way. So, if there is anything to be learned, it is that life is a relentless struggle for happiness and love is a cherry on top of melting ice cream.

Thank you to The Lark publication and editor Denise Larkin for a wonderful place to read and write on Medium.
