The Indelible Effects of Reading Powerful Writing

You don’t even realize how it touches you in the moment

There’s writing that makes you tear up And you don’t even notice until you’ve finished reading, And you scratch that little itch under your eye Noticing that your finger is wet There’s writing that makes you sigh And you don’t even notice until you take a breath as big as the world Someone near you asks ‘what’s the matter?’ You say ‘life is the matter’ And you smile There’s writing that tears at your heart And you don’t even notice until one day Your heart has repaired all of the little micro-tears Like a good little bodybuilder And you are stronger for it

There’s writing like yours and mine that will touch someone in ways unfathomable And you won’t even notice until you do

This poem was inspired by a poem recently posted by River's Writings. (link below) She explores the darkness we all know so well in our lives but often don’t know how to respond.

I love to read and I like exploring how I feel about things I read by writing about them. Sometimes when I am reading something particularly powerful, I have to stop and put the book (or reading device) down in an attempt to integrate what I just read.

The modern pace of life is such that we can move easily from one thing to another, flitting like bees from flower to flower, but unlike the bees, we fail to make honey from the nectar.

With this in mind, I started a publication called Read Write Love which is all about riffing on a quote, phrase, or passage you read, exploring your thoughts on it while also acknowledging the source, be it from a book, a webpage, a Medium article, etc. The publication style is inspired by the idea of wabi sabi which makes something beautiful from fragments, honoring the beauty in transient things.

If you enjoy riffing on the inspiring thoughts of others and adding your voice to the chorus of universal music, please visit the publication’s submission guidelines.

Runa Heilung is an Old Soul Alchemist, mystic, and dream archaeologist. She works with dreams, oracles, and the imagination to help people rediscover their Inner Wisdom.
