The High Calorie Punch in 10 Christmas Foods!
#Story 180 of my 365-day challenge!
This is my wall of ‘fame’, but there are many more I’ve yet to add.
Seriously, if we’re aware of them, we can take action. Here’s the list of foods that should be eaten in moderation as they pack a lot of calories if over-consumed!
Disclaimer: These figures represent averages. For precise accuracy, I recommend verifying them yourself.
Generally, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories a day for women and 2,500 for men.
Happy Holiday!
- Coca-Cola: I don’t care that you’ve been around for like a million years!! You should be ashamed of yourself for packing a massive 110 calories per 8oz glass. Keep an eye on your intake.
- Eggnog: Not only can this thing empty a room due to the fumes it makes you produce, but it weighs in at around 220–250 calories per cup (240 ml). This is based on a recipe using milk, cream, sugar, egg yolks, and spices. Help us, please!
It seems like Eggnog deserves time-out on the naughty step— it’s quite the aroma producer and calorie killer!
According to a study by Wren Kitchens, the average person packs away 5,373 calories on Christmas day. That’s twice the recommended daily average for men and three times the RDA for women.
- Hot chocolate: The full cream-rich delight that, due to my lactose intolerance, I cannot enjoy. But for those of you who can, it packs a nice punch with 250–350 calories per cup (240ml). Use dark chocolate and milk/water instead of cream, and leave out the whipped cream.
- Baked potatoes: These are my favorite, but if they’re loaded with goose fat and other fats, they can pack 100–150 calories for one medium-sized potato (50g). Choose smaller potatoes, roast them with healthy fats until crispy, limit gravy and butter, and balance your plate.
- Stuffing: It’s the side dish that I can’t resist. Just a big, large dollop for me. This weighs in at 200–300 calories per cup (240ml). Opt for vegetarian versions, smaller portions, or whole-grain stuffing. Even half a cup is a lot.
- Cheese platter: Let’s get cheesy with a lovely cheese platter. Here’s where we need to be careful. One ounce (28g) of cheddar cheese plus one cracker adds up to 150–200 calories! Choose leaner cheeses, have smaller portions, pair them with fruits or crackers, and limit fatty dips.
- Piña colada: My favorite cocktail. Oh, it’s loaded with calories. A 6.8 oz (200 ml) serving comes in at 526 calories. Maybe I’ll have a Margarita instead, at 4 oz (120 ml) is 168 calories. But that’s still a lot.
- Okay, what about a glass of Merlot? A 5 oz (145 ml) serving has 122 calories. And let’s not forget beer. A 12 oz (355 ml) serving of craft beer or higher alcohol beer ranges from 170 to 350 calories!
- Rice: For those who like a bit. Brown Rice: On average, cooked brown rice contains about 111 calories per 100 grams. White Rice: Cooked white rice typically contains around 130 calories per 100 grams. Wow, a plate full of rice is about 280 calories!
- Chicken wings: Who knew that little chicken wings could kill us with calories? On average, 5 roasted chicken wings (without sauce) might contain approximately 400–500 calories. Wow, let’s not talk about frying it!! I only found this out recently!
- Pigs in Blanket: Pigs in blankets are little sausages wrapped in bacon. That little fellow that seems so sweet can be at least 60 calories. Imagine you eat 6!! Enjoy a few, skip the pastry, or choose low-fat sausages. P.S.
This is my wall of fame, but there are many more I’ve yet to add. I’m looking these up, but I thought I would share them with you. I think I’ll add more tomorrow, as these foods need to be outed!
