The Good News Read

Three heartwarming stories from today's news

At a time when all we ever see in the news is bad, this morning it was heartening to catch three items that would warm the heart of a frozen eskimo.

First off was the news that a six year old girl who had wandered off from her farmhouse home in north Devon. The young girl was reported missing at 9.30 pm and a police search swung into action using a helicopter. Before too long the helicopter's infra red camera found the girl through the darkness fast asleep in the corner of a field half a mile away from her home. The girl was picked up by a car patrol and taken to hospital for a medical examination where she checked out all ok. How wonderful to read of a good outcome when all too often these kind of stories end in heartbreak.

The second piece that caught my eye was the report about how the Jamaican Olympic Gold Medalist 110 metre hurdler Hansle Parchment ended up at the wrong Tokyo venue for his race. In danger of missing the start, Hansle tried to catch a lift to the correct venue, all to no avail. Then along came the heroin of the story. A Japanese local called Tiana came to his rescue by giving him the money to catch a taxi to the right stadium. Hansle not only arrived on time for the warm up, he went on to win the race in fine style. After that Hansle went out of his way to track Tiana down so that he could thank her and repay her the money for the taxi. Even more satisfying, Tiana was invited to an all expenses paid trip to Jamaica by the Jamaican authorities.

The third piece that caught my eye was about a Canadian helicopter pilot who illegally landed his chopper in a restaurant carpark so he could satisfy a sudden craving for an ice cream. Local residents were gobsmacked to see the helicopter land, kicking up lots of dust, in the carpark of the Dairy Queen Restaurant in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. At first everybody thought the helicopter was responding to some sort of emergency, until they saw the pilot come back out of the restaurant with a refreshing ice cream cake. I guess his need, at least to him, was an urgent matter, otherwise he would not have done it. Now the pilot will have to pay the price through the courts, making it the most expensive ice cream he has ever had in his life.
