Summary

The author reflects on life's monotony and the importance of personal responsibility in creating one's own drama and opportunities amidst the routine of daily life.

Abstract

The author begins the day contemplating the overcast sky and the unchanging rhythm of a new clock, symbolizing the predictability of life. Drawing from a drama teacher's advice, he muses on the necessity of drama in making life interesting and how it shapes our identity. Despite a lack of personal drama, the author notes the world's unending cycle of events, comparing it to the movie "Groundhog Day." Embracing the sentiment that there's always room for possibilities, he believes in actively creating these moments both in his writing career and personal life, taking responsibility for what comes into his life, whether good or bad. The author concludes by acknowledging the need to craft his own narrative for the day, likening himself to a clown fish exploring a coral reef, ready to discover and comment on life's unfolding drama.

As I lazily open my eyes the new day greets me with an overcast sky. It may rain later on they say. In the background all I can hear is the slow unwavering tic toc of the new clock my wife bought yesterday. Outside all the can be heard is the low hum of distant traffic punctuated only by the piercing caw of some itinerant crows. To all intents and purposes it seems as if the rest of the world world is having quiet sleepy morning.

I remember many years ago some drama teacher telling me that what makes for a good play at the theatre or movie is some sort of drama. I thought about that a little and came to the conclusion that for many people it is drama that makes for an interesting life. What's more, it is the dramatic events in our lives, good, bad and indifferent, that define who and what we are. And it is the job of writers and actors to chronicle and encapsulate the dramatic moments the make a life.

This morning there really isn't any drama to speak of other than what I can read in the news or hear on the television. And having scoured the news I could see nothing that directly effects me other than three good news stories that I wrote a short piece about. The rest is just a case of the same old shit on a different day. None of it touches me due to over familiarity. Politicians, governments, criminals. all getting up to their usual tricks. Somebody once commented that human beings lack imagination when it comes to committing sins. Everything is merely repetition, just like in Groundhog Day.

It's true we are all stuck in a loop of one sort or another. However, in the original script for the Groundhog Day movie, screenwriter Danny Rubin wrote.....

“I’ll tell you what I do know. Even in a day as long as this, even in a lifetime of endless repetition, there’s still room for possibilities.” Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be.

And I do firmly believe in this sentiment. The question is, when and where are those possibilities going to come from? Are those possibilities going to be created by ourselves or by other people?

As a writer I have found that I have to personally create those possibilities in my occupation as a well as in my personal life. I do not believe that anything comes into my life uninvited, consciously or subconsciously. Ergo, all that has happened to me, good bad and indifferent, I asked for in one way or another. That brings a hell of a lot of responsibility down on my shoulders whether I like it or not.

The low hum of distant traffic has died down now. The crows have flown off across the field to who knows where. The clock incessantly tic tocs still its linea path through time. The overcast sky has not changed one iota, at least to my eye it hasn't. Today is a day when I shall have to create my own little piece of drama to comment upon, a piece of drama that will define who and what I am, at least for today. Perhaps I'll be a small clown fish swimming around a beautiful coral reef repeatedly saying to myself "Oh look, a colourful piece of coral!"
