#38 — THE ART OF COMMENTING — A COLLABORATIVE SERIES WITH Grandma Smillew, James Bellerjeau, AND R C Hammond

The Generic Comment is Overdue for a Makeover

The necessity of change

The Mediumverse as we know has altered and we’re rolling in the deep.

Based on the changes, we’re only going to get paid for the first hit. Apart from a conversation, there’s no reason to keep the comment loop going.

Will the time spent reading comments be counted? We don’t know.

Thus, in this episode, we will cover the generic comment which apart from being easy is also about to become meaningful. It’s time to experiment.

Ground rules:

  • You can use it both as a comment, or a response to one.
  • After you finish the full 30 seconds, of course.
  • Don’t ask for a follow or read. Let them come to you.

#1. Thank You.

Saying these words in English is so common that it often loses its effect. Try another language instead. Learn a few words or use Google Translate.

Merci beaucoup. Danke schön. Muchas gracias.

#2. The Heart Emoji.

I’m yet to come across a single person who doesn’t like to be on the receiving end of one of these. It’s simple, quick, and effective.

It’s in the air. Spread some platonic love around: 💙 💜 💛

#3. Compliment Shower:

When you like something you read, whether it is the writing, idea, or even a single line, don’t hold back. Offer a genuine compliment.

Transcendental. Genius. Exhilarating. Riotous. Best story ever.

#4. Envy Worthy:

From time to time, we do get jealous of others’ stories. Skill or success. And there’s nothing wrong with conveying that sentiment.

  • I can’t believe I didn’t think of it first.
  • I’m writing a story inspired by yours.
  • I want to hate you but I can’t, it’s so good.

#5. More Emojis:

🔥 — Your story is on fire. 💣 — Your story is the bomb. 🚀 — This deserves a boost. 💀 — I’m dying. ROFL. 💡 — I just got an idea.

#6. Make a List:

Whenever you spot a decent generic comment, copy + paste and put it in a Google Doc. Mine currently has 57 options. At a loss? Put them in rotation.

I had this same exact experience. So glad to be able to relate.

Don’t leave just yet.

Let’s discuss the alternatives for a second.

A thoughtful comment goes a long way in conveying community sentiment. Something we aspire toward, and wish to get better at.

It’s also okay to not comment. Some writers have shared their valid reasons for it. I 💛 you, as long as you keep reading my stories 😉.

But, if you ever find yourself in a pinch, practice the new and improved generic comment. And remember, you can always do so on my stories.
