Day 26: Overcoming the trials and obstacles

Our strengths and hardships Genetics and archetypes Play and discard cards Discern away dissonance Spiritual growth ensues

This poem draws its inspirations from several planes of existence. Those of you familiar with my work on the meanings and purposes of life may recall that I believe in reincarnation

and that this is my soul’s 17,043rd human experience.

The first two lines draw from this previous entry in the challenge:

Incarnate handsome Book-smart wealthy privileged Behind these 8-balls Face yours and others’ demons Emerge confident and Light

The term archetypes in the second line refers to Carl Jung’s work and his beliefs regarding the collective unconscious.

The third line evokes my work on the concepts of acceptance and “it is what it is.”

The third line also understands that in life, as in many card games, we are not stuck with the original hand — we can discard and try our luck with what comes next. “Know when to hold ’em and know when to fold em” also comes to mind.

The fourth line evokes the difficulties people face with cognitive dissonance.

The term cognitive dissonance is used to describe the mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs, values, or attitudes. People tend to seek consistency in their attitudes and perceptions, so this conflict causes feelings of unease or discomfort.

This inconsistency between what people believe and how they behave motivates people to engage in actions that will help minimize feelings of discomfort. People attempt to relieve this tension in different ways, such as by rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding new information.

Holly Kellums wrote a very moving story today on the cognitive dissonance she grappled with as a child over concepts of racism.

And if we want to get rid of racism because it is wrong, we have to be careful how we think. You understand, don’t you, Holly, that we are all created equally?

“Yes, I do, Granny”, I said, with a smile.

The fifth line of the tanka reflects this summation of the meaning of life:

the meaning of life is to learn — for the soul to learn how to make a human act like a better human.

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” — Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

White Feather conducted the deepest exploration of reincarnation and the concept of time that I have encountered here:
