The Fusion of Language Expresses Deepest Feelings

More ‘Words That Don’t Translate Directly into English

Photo by Daniele Levis Pelusi on Unsplash

Language is a powerful tool and there are so many words that express our feelings in ways that can’t be expressed by a simple thought. I love finding words that don’t translate directly into English.

I also love English words that invoke a feeling that isn’t easy to describe.

The fusion of many languages produces a dialect that expresses deepest feelings instinctively.

Transitioning to Hope

I reflect on the sorrow in the world with this exploration of the words and expressions found in many languages — words of sadness and hope, longing, and loss. Saudade, Koev halev, Tristesse are others.

I Never Want to Live Without You

This powerful haiku explores a word that expresses the strong feeling that you would never want to exist on the planet without your love.

Look For Mystery in the Moonwake

Here is a compound word that has been used since the early 19th century but it’s not commonly heard. I love the feeling it invokes and felt it was best expressed with a haiku.

Acceptance

When you are in the ultimate state of acceptance, this word expresses that state perfectly.

We Are Perfectly Imperfect — Embrace Your Flaws

This lovely little haiku explores the Japanese concept of beauty in imperfections.

When You Long For The Bonds of Home

Deep homesickness or longing for a romanticized past is expressed in this haiku.

When They Are Never Satisfied With the Result

This Japanese word describes the concept of never-ending improvement in search of perfection as processes are streamlined.

Words that Don’t Translate Directly into English

I’m fascinated with words that express powerful emotions but don’t translate directly into English. Here’s the first collection.
