The First Cut
A 100-word story
The lights snapped on, causing Peter to blink as stainless surfaces shone back at him. He cleared his throat and thought through the steps one more time.
A simple lipoma. Easy. Cut, remove, cauterize, stitch. He could do this. Had to. He’d given her his word.
The sound of padded footsteps broke the silence. Personnel filtered in, and a low buzz filled the room.
He leaned to palpate the soft lump on Chloe’s neck. His gaze was met with a lolling tongue and happy panting. The silver-faced patient wagged submissively as, for the first time, he lifted the syringe.
