100–word story (competition entry)

“Once you cross, you can never return,” Sam whispered.
Bette grasped his thick fingers and inhaled dank mist from the moon-dappled bayou. Trembling, she stepped onto a rotted plank. He was mistaken. She would return. To him.
“Come with me!” she pleaded, fearing the journey’s next phase.
“You know I can’t.”
Thundering hooves approached. With a final kiss, she scampered across the bridge, her shadow dissolving into darkness, the clink of chains fading.
The horseman halted at the muddy bank and searched for the young lovers.
“Be free, my love,” Sam murmured as he turned to confront his rival.
This story was my entry to the 2021 NYCMidnight 100-Word Microfiction Challenge. The assignment was to write a 100-word story in the genre of romance in which someone/something crosses a bridge and using the word “phase” in the story. I’m staying tuned to see if I advance to the next round. (Romance is not my genre.)
My thanks to Stephen Dalton for telling me about the competition. Here’s his entry (fairy tale genre):
