The Fear of Being Judged? You Are Not That Important.

People don’t really care about you.

The notion that people don’t really care might sound stark at first.

In my college days, I was tortured by the fear of judgment. The desire to break free from this self-imposed confinement led me to explore internships, where I encountered someone who would profoundly alter my perspective.

This lady, a soul touched by the complexities of hormonal issues, embodied kindness in its purest form. Working alongside her, I observed a remarkable trait — an apparent indifference to the judgments of others. Intrigued, I approached her, seeking enlightenment on her seemingly impervious demeanour.

Her response resonated with me, “People don’t care how you look and what you’re doing. The thing is, we care because there is fear inside us. The fear of failure, rejection, and whatnot. And those fears are nothing but assumptions.”

These words became a catalyst for my change. It dawned on me that much of the judgment we fear is rooted in our own insecurities and projections of assumed perceptions rather than genuine concern from others.

Of course, this doesn’t imply complete disregard for opinions. There exists a nuanced distinction between the opinions of strangers and those of the people we hold dear. The latter, the “good” people in our lives, offer guidance rather than baseless judgment.

“If you’re thinking about what people will think of you, then what will people think?”

The truth is, beyond our immediate circles, the world is bustling with its own concerns. Most individuals are preoccupied with their lives, aspirations, and challenges. The intricacies of our daily choices, appearances, or endeavours seldom occupy the forefront of their thoughts.

Understanding this liberating concept allows us to shed the weight of unnecessary worries. The fear of judgment often stems from our own minds, conjuring scenarios that are unlikely to materialise. People are too immersed in their own narratives to scrutinise every step we take or stumble we make.

The realisation that people don’t really care is an emancipating revelation. It grants us the freedom to live life authentically, unburdened by the perceived expectations of an audience that, in truth, is largely indifferent.
