The Eye

GiaB prompt #6: the moon

Photo by Mathew Schwartz on Unsplash

“Father,” the child asked as he looked toward the night sky, “Why does the moon slowly disappear and reappear in the sky each month?”

“It’s the blinking of one of the eyes of Ixchel you see in the sky.”

“Ixchel?”

“She’s the goddess of birth, and her eye watches over us from the time we’re born through our entire lives.”

“She watches all of us?”

“Yes. She takes a keen interest in each and every one of us. That’s why it’s so important to treat others with kindness, as she is watching over them as well as you and I.”

“Does she talk to people?”

“No. The language of the gods is not something we could ever understand.”

“If she just watches us, why do we believe she’s the goddess of birth?”

“Because a woman becomes fertile with every blink of her eye. That’s how we learn about the nature of the gods. We see the patterns in their movements and compare them with the patterns in our lives.”

“Why does she only have one eye?”

“She has two eyes, but we can only see one now.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Ixchel is the goddess of birth, and after you’re born, you can see her eye watching you. But she is also the goddess of death, and she watches over those who’ve passed on as well. It’s her other eye that the dead see.”

Ixchel is the Mayan goddess of the moon, birth, and death.
