The Essence of Water

An original poem

take lesson from the water which has no direction obeys no master cares not for what people say of it only seeks the freedom to run, to flow, cannot be made in form by controlling hands nor bristling branch nor rocks which seek to impede its growth it simply goes around such obstacles or over, under or directly through flooding the mouth of anyone who dares suggest it be less than it was forever meant to be

This poem attempts to explore human striving within an awareness of the greater context. To that end, it is told through the element of water, giving the natural world a narrative presence. It explores the complex question of how we wrestle control of our lives from the hands of others who seek to prevent us from reaching our given potential. The narrator advises us to take an example from water that allows nothing in its path to hinder its course.
