The End of Abortion in the USA?
The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending almost 50 years of legalized abortion in the United States
The Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, the historic decision that legalized abortion in the United States.
President Joe Biden and Democratic leaders around the country promptly decried the Supreme Court’s decision, while Republicans cheered it.
In reaction to demonstrations outside the Supreme Court, police have reinforced their presence in Washington, DC. Legal experts believe they are unlikely to succeed since the Supreme Court has delegated abortion decision-making to the states.
Republicans are hailing the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade as a long-awaited victory for the anti-abortion movement.
Republicans expressed confidence but not a victory when a draft version of the ruling was leaked to Politico in May.
For most Republicans, the decision provided a chance to highlight their party’s ability to deliver on longstanding campaign pledges as the midterm elections approached.
Most Republican senators did not share Collins’ concerns and have said unequivocally that the repeal of Roe is only a launching pad for the anti-abortion campaign, not a goal.
Republicans have also said that if they regain control of the House, they want to revive the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”
Abortion is projected to be prohibited or highly restricted in around half of the states.
