The End

Or is it a beginning

There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story.

Frank Herbert

I have told him all

I don’t know if he believes

Still, we are going

He is coming with her, though whether he believes her story or is coming for love, she is not sure. It does not matter.

They will have a few years to prepare, years to have a home and each other, perhaps friends. She knows there will be allies in Haven. The cards have shown that.

But for now, she feels alive and hopeful, looking to the future with eagerness instead of dreading the everlasting sameness.

They will leave tomorrow for Haven, deep in the mountains of Appalachia.

Prologue This is the story of an impoverished fortune-teller who has lived for many centuries, barely surviving in modern times. She has sensed a coming storm and has gathered her magical powers to stand against it.

The Beginning This was her beginning. She was a young girl in love. Then that life, with its hopes and dreams, was lost. The soldiers took her to the temple to become the high priestess.

The Attack The magician aided the emperor in his attempt to possess her. Unleashing her power, she slaughtered the emperor. But she was no match for the magician. He cursed her to his fate: eternal, unchanging life.

The Escape The emperor lay dead at her feet. The magician had hurled his curse at her and vanished. With the help of the hierophant and the consent of the empress, she escaped. The hierophant had told her that, after centuries of waiting and wondering, she would come to a convergence of time and place that would make it possible to lift the curse. But he did not tell her how or when that would happen.

Waiting and Wandering She had grown weary. Sometimes, for comfort, in the many hours she spent alone in her van, she daydreamed happy endings.

Love She has her happiness, but she does not yet know if it will lead to an ending. If he will go, they can return to Haven and make a home there. They can wait for the coming storm.

When I was very young one of my favorite TV shows was The Roy Rogers Show. It always ended with the song “Happy Trails.”

Happy trails to you, Until we meet again. Happy trails to you, Keep smiling until then.

So let us smile and hope as our two lovers depart, like all of us, into an unknown future.

I conclude the haiku series of the fortune teller here, though this is not the last time you will hear of her.

She has more stories to tell from her long life and many travels. And she and her young love still have a destination with destiny in the Appalachian town called Haven.
