The Encroaching Darkness

Leo always thought of himself as a fairly smart person, a good mix of book smarts and street smarts. He was curious about life and had lived enough of it that he had seen its darker side. However, it seems like now the darkness has grown and has infected all aspects of life.

Leo can’t even pick up a newspaper or turn on the news anymore, life has become so vapid and grotesque. The trees are burning, the water is rising and all we care about is getting our treats. We have become a species of nonthinking consumption machines., mindlessly consuming anything and everything in our paths.

Leo took it upon himself to save the world.

It would take a lot of time and effort but Leo viewed it as not only necessary; but his calling in life. He could see the issues in the world and knew we were on the wrong path. He believed in himself and his ability to save the world from the encroaching darkness.

The magnitude of the task was not lost on Leo, and although he was confident he didn’t know where to start. There are already enough people on the internet writing and making videos about issues in the world with no real point or purpose. Complaining about the way things are yet offering no solutions of their own.

Leo wasn’t going to do that, besides the internet was something that befuddled and annoyed him. He needed to take action, do something that would have an impact. But what can I do now? Pick up some trash? Recycle some plastic? These things seem so trivial in the face of all the issues we face. Leo wanted to make a difference.

Leo was at a loss, were the problems of the world out of reach already? Was he not as smart and capable as he thought?

His depression continued to grow, Leo looked out the window at the pitiful little scrap of dirt and weeds he called a yard.

how can I save the world if I can’t take care of my own house? Am I a fool to think I can do anything meaningful? he thought.

If I can’t change the world at least I can change my part of the world.

Suddenly Leo was reinvigorated, the problems of the world are large and complex, the problems with his front yard were much more manageable.

I need to start with myself, how am I going to save the world when I can’t do anything for myself. Leo was a man of few skills which means he has to rely on others for everything, from food to shelter to clothing.

Leo was shocked to realize he was just as bad as all those other dum-dums he was passing judgment on. This was a breakthrough for Leo, he now had a goal and was also humbled by his shortcomings.

Leo now looked out at his little scrap of scraggly yard and could picture all the life. Vegetables and flowers and herbs are being grown together. Insects and birds and little furry creatures scurrying around. Providing food for Leo and improving the land. It might be small but it was Leo’s and he was going to make the most of it.
