Philosophy of Insight Not Tradition
It was a new day and Leo was determined to get up early and begin his new life. The first thing he does is his morning routine. It primarily consists of stretching, thinking about life while on the toilet, and plenty of coffee; brewed extra strong and black, because that’s how Leo likes it.
Leo cherishes his morning time, early enough that most people aren’t awake, nature itself has yet to wake up.
In the early morning quiet, Leo is the happiest.
After his morning time, Leo sat down at his computer. Leo wasn’t a big fan of computers and avoided them at all costs. His desperation to help was so great that the only thing greater was his ignorance. This had forced him to consult his mortal enemy, the internet.
He wasn’t even sure what to search for, problems with the world?
He decided he needed to narrow his focus. The environment, seems like a big problem, what can I do to save the environment? He wondered.
This lead Leo down a rabbit hole, all different ideas, and theories, all coming from multiple places, all of them contradicting each other. None of this makes any sense, what are all these charts and graphs? I don’t know how to read any of these things. Even if I did, I don’t know what to do with the information. Do any of the people talking about these issues on the internet know what it means either?
The one thing that became clear to Leo after a few hours of research, everyone has an opinion based on how they identify themselves.
Vegans think all animals are precious so we should never harm any of them, not even for milk or eggs. The other end of the spectrum is the massive factory farms that treat animals as commodities and have a financial interest in keeping things the way they are.
There are people in-between, but their opinion of what is good for the environment is always based on their belief systems.
All of these people were biased in some way. Whether it be moral or financial reasons, they were defending their side regardless of how flimsy or wrong their reasons were.
It wasn’t possible for them to all be right. Are some right and others wrong? How do I know who is right?
As Leo thought about it, he concluded that the truth should be the truth no matter what.
If different belief systems, or ideologies, or bribes, get people to think and believe differently, they will always be biased. If Leo wanted to find the truth he needed to use all the information. While beliefs can blind people to the truth, they can also show us new ideas we didn’t see before.
Instead of shunning different ideologies, Leo embraced them. By learning as much as possible, from as many sources as possible, he would get to the truth.
It would take more than just listening to others, Leo wanted the truth, and the truth transcends all time and place. All beliefs and ideologies are used to explain how we should view the world, and they all have different opinions.
Leo wanted to find the truth, the truth about life. Something that can apply to anyone, and benefits everyone.
