The Enchanted Bunny

Or was I the one enchanted?

Five thousand things happening in a day. Good news, bad news. Notifications, acknowledgements, messages, epiphanies, moments of dread followed by moments of joy. Memories. Questions. Misunderstandings. Giggles.

It was a full day and I had to get out. I had to visit that other reality… outside.

It was my fourth walk of the day. The sun had just set. The air was eerily still. The birds were preparing for their evening symphony.

With each step I let everything go. I cleared my noggin. I took multiple deep breaths. My legs took me away on a balloon ride…

And then I suddenly stopped as I became aware of a very cute bunny rabbit in the grass no more than six feet away from me. It was enjoying its dinner. I had my own dinner just forty-five minutes earlier. That was one reason I was going for a walk. Nothing helps digestion more than a walk.

Walk. Walk. Walk. My walking came to an abrupt halt. I tried not to move a muscle so as not to spook the bunny.

The bunny kept eating. Grass, alfalfa, weeds, dandelions… I was not paying attention to what the bunny was eating. My full attention was on the rabbit. It was so beautiful!

The bunny kept eating but it also kept glancing at me. It was watching me watching it. Standing just six feet away from it, I was apparently not a red alert threat to it, not something to make it run away.

I started talking to the bunny, “Hi there. You sure are beautiful. I want to just hug you but don’t worry, I won’t. I can love you from six feet away. I just want to tell you that you are one of the reasons this world is so incredible. I bless you. I bless you. I bless you.”

While repeatedly looking at me, the bunny rabbit kept eating. It’s rude to interrupt someone while they are eating, so I stopped talking.

I finally said good-bye and walked on. Except for its mouth, the bunny didn’t move as I walked away. I was looking back at it. It continued its dinner as though it had not been interrupted.

I walked for several blocks through the urban forest in which I live and which I share with many plants and animals. I saw a hawk, a red male cardinal, and thousands of doves and song birds. I picked some strawberries from the strawberry patch in the back of that vacant house that has been for sale for over a year. I experienced orgasmic olfactory euphoria passing that fence covered with honeysuckle. I hugged a couple of trees.

On the way back home I passed that same patch of lawn where the bunny was enjoying its dinner. It was still there and it was still eating.

I greeted it again. I blessed it once again. It didn’t move but kept looking at me.

I didn’t want to disturb the bunny any more so I didn’t stop and I kept walking home. It’s so nice to have friends.

When I got home I could not at first remember anything else that happened today. I was too focused on the joy my walk just brought me. Once I started thinking again the day started coming back to me.

The day and the walk ever so briefly fought for my attention.

The walk won.

It is so wonderful to live on a planet that is known in so many parts of the Universe as… Paradise.

How can we live in this world without noticing and blessing the rabbits?
